...I'd say a .223 in a bullpup design might be the way to go...compact firepower...easy to handle...

Scenario dependent. In the House, my .45, if I have to go outside and check my property my 870. Zombies? My AR.

My fully loaded, sawed off shotgun, is beside my bed at night and behind the microwave during the day.

I think that the "correct" answer....if there is such an animal......is at least partially determined by where you live. I've been to AndyC's house. I've been to v-rog's house. I've even been to my house. Those two fine gentlemen live in neighborhoods similar to mine. I don't know what AndyC thinks is best for his home. I know that v-rog thinks that the best choice is that with which you are most proficient.....which leaves a lot of room for variations. Personally, although I have an AR at ready access if I need one, I rely on a pistol as my primary HD weapon. In fact, that weapon is likely to be whatever I was carrying before I went to bed that night. As far as long guns go, I guess if I had a HD shotgun, I'd probably prefer that as I am a little uncomfortable with the idea of discharging a centerfire rifle inside my house, even if it's "just" a 5.56.

I have to say I'm shocked that you don't have a home defense shotgun. The Annoyed Man wrote:I think that the "correct" answer....if there is such an animal......is at least partially determined by where you live. Just when I thought I about ready to get my first AR, a Sig, you show up with this beauty. How much does a semi-auto version of one of these go for? When I looked around I got everywhere from $900-$4000.gigag04 wrote:FYPspeedsix wrote:...I'd say a ..45acp in a bullpup design might be the way to go...compact firepower...easy to handle...

Re: What Is the Best Weapon for Home Defense? - A Serious Di
TAM is right, this is a very situation determined question.
Right now, I live in a decent neighborhood (hooray) in town (boo). While our lots are long, they are also skinny. So, my house is less than 10 yards from the house on either side. That makes me worry about using a rifle for home defense.
My current "bump in the night" plan is to grab the light and the glock 19, let the wife grab the .357 lever gun, and based on the situation, go from there. That being said, I do have an AK ready to rock if needed with hollowpoint ammo and another 3 magazines of hollowpoints on a chest rig (or, because its a rather utilitarian surplus chicom chest rig, Andy likes to call it a "mag bra" .)
If I lived out in the country, I might be more comfortable with a magazine fed .308 rifle as my go to rifle.
I've been heavily considering getting back into the pistol caliber carbine game (had a sub2K, didn't care for it much and sold it....pre becoming a glock owner...should have hung onto it).
I think a PCC would allow me to have some extra firepower available without worrying as much about overpenetration into my neighbors living room.

Short version: Rifles > Shotguns > Pistols
An AK with sidefolder or underfolder is your ticket. new rd or old rd both works fine.

I came across this today and remembered this old thread. I'd never seen a slug shot into gel before.
I don't keep a shotgun loaded in the house, but do have either an M4 and or G21 within reach. However, that sure is some wound channel with that slug.

And just for comparison. Here's the same test by the same folks with 5.56 M855.
