3 gun setup

#1

Post by jcarp02 »

Had an opportunity to try the 3 gun yesterday out at PSC and had an absolute blast. I need to rig up something, however, for the next match. Digging in my pockets for AR mags and shotgun shells definitely did not help my time. That being said, does anyone have any recommendations on where to get mag holders and shell carriers?

How much do you have to spend? My personal favorite is Tactical Tailor, top notch quality and 100% US made. But you will pay a little more. For the more budget minded consumer Condor is OK as is Black Hawk.

Depends upon how far you want to go, and how much $$$$ you want to spend. Comp-Tac and BladeTech make some good pistol/AR mag pouches. As for shotgun shell holders, most folks are going to the AP INDUSTRIES LLC 4x4 shell holders, but California Custom Works holders are still popular. I highly recommend getting a dedicated belt (inner/outter, ex CR Speed, Safariland, etc) so that you can put the pouches where you need them and not have to worry about belt loops.

Here was my 3-Gun Setup last year:

Image

Belt = CR Speed inner/outter
Holster = BladeTech DOH
Pistol Mag Pouch = BladeTech Competition
AR Mag Pouch = BladeTech
Shell Caddies = AP INDUSTRIES LLC (4x4 shells) & California Custom Works (6 shell)

I have since updated my belt to the Safariland ELS system (no pic yet).

ETA: Search around, places like Brownells and MidwayUSA have good prices. Comp-Tac is local to the Houston area, might save you some shipping.

Thanks for the info, guys.

MM- I just checked out the CR Speed belts. From what I understand on the website, there is an inner that goes on like a regular belt then an outer that goes outside the belt loops. Is this correct? Also, those Bladetech mag pouches you have, are those with the Tek Lok back? If so, how do you like them?

Yes, the "fuzzy" side of the vecro goes in your pant belt loops, like a regular belt. Then the outer just attaches to it. Same setup the USPSA/IPSC guys use.

Yes, I use the ones with tek-lok, therefore you put them on the belt, and then they don't move. And it makes it easy to move around if needed for a particular stage.

I take it by your set-up that you don't need more than one spare rifle mag per stage? Put it looks like you'll need a lot of shotgun shells?

I'd like to get into three gun big time. Been thinking about a Saiga shotgun for it and maybe an AK-47 for the rifle.
My posts on this website are worth every cent you paid me for them.

Looks like this stuff would be fun for a younger person.....but maybe a little too "energetic" for me. :mrgreen:

Depends. :smile: That setup is changeable, depending upon the stage. I do have another ar mag pouch, just not pictured. And sometimes I move the 6x shell holder over by the pistol and it holds slugs. That's the nice part of the CR Speed/Safariland belt setups, you can change it to fit the stage you are about to shoot, then change it again for the next stage.

FYI - at most competitions, a Saiga shotgun will put you in OPEN class (red dot on pistols, mutiple optics on rifles, optics on Shotguns). Not that it's bad, just wanted to make you aware. :coolgleamA:

Any three gun shooters go to Best of the West for general range time? I would love to talk / meet with someone who does three gun. I have a setup currently that would allow me to run in the Tactical Heavy class. .308 Saiga , 12 ga 870, and Para .45

I had fun yesterday. Couldn't get my S12 to run that great. I think it may be a mag issue. But when you talk about guys fishing stuff out of their pockets I reminds me of the RO we had in out group. I'd say in his 50s and when he was loading his shotgun all he had was a pouch on his side. The ones trap/skeet shooter us and I think he finished 4th out of the day. I really didn't get to see him shoot until out last stage which was the shotgun stage shooting behind the door. With plates and 3 clays. I think he had to borrow someones shotgun and he still did it IIRC 17sec. I was like dang! I need another shotgun.

Yes it was up by the time I had lunch and got home. It took me a while to find. I made the mistake of trying to shoot with a DMS instead of my Aimpoint. Never shot with a scope before. That really killed me on the first and third stage. But I had fun

I will admit that 3-Gun competition can get expensive, but there are budget ways to get into the sport. Start out shooting irons, and use a pump shotgun. Also, the competition belts are nice, but not required.. Work out a budget and a plan and get there over time. Also, keep an eye on the competition forums like http://www.brianenos.com/forums/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , folks there are always upgrading their setup and selling used equipment. Easy way to find some great deals.
