Driving to the Texas Firearms Instructor Conference

#1

Post by cabindoor »

Just putting out a friendly reminder....If anyone out here in the West Texas area is going to the Texas Firearms Instructor Conference, I will be driving from here in El Paso down to Houston. If anyone needs a ride and wants to split the cost of gas, just message me and we can discuss it. Thanks.

I'm headed down on Thursday for the Conference from Burleson (South Side of Fort Worth). I, too, would not mind giving a ride if someone wants it to split the gas, but you have to tell good jokes :biggrinjester: ...just kidding about that last part...

It looks like I will be driving down late Thursday (after rush hour) from Dallas and returning after the conference (maybe after dinner). Anyone nearby that would like to carpool, let me know.

Houston locals, I seek your traffic advice. Heading back to Dallas, would it be better to leave immediately after the conference or hang around a couple hours and leave later? I have no idea how Houston traffic is, but I'd rather not sit idling in a log jam on the highway for hours.

In my experience, 45 Northbound from downtown to Beltway 8 (at least) is stop-and-go from 4pm to 7pm on work days.

Houston TranStar has a realtime map if you want to preview your route during rush hour Monday to get an idea.
Or monitor while you eat dinner Friday until it clears. ;-) http://traffic.houstontranstar.org

:iagree: I'd take the Hardy Toll Road and miss a lot of the traffic. You get onto it by taking Loop 610 eastbound off I-45 North, then taking the Hardy Toll Road exit. The toll road merges with I-45 northbound just south of The Woodlands, well north of most of the traffic. You may hit more near Conroe because of never-ending road construction on I-45.

I'd wait until at least 6:00 before heading north.

The Conroe traffice around 1488 and 242 at I45N is "poopy" between 1630 and 1830. There is almost always a little slow down, but those time periods in the afternoon seem the worst. If The conference ends in the 1500 time frame I would be tempted to find a place for a nice dinner before heading north. JMPHO, YMMV

It's over at 1600 and I agree with having dinner before heading north.

We won't have time to visit during the meeting's, if some will join in a meal after it would give us that opportunity ;-) and get the travler's on the road at a better time.
