Do you have a template you used, or did you buy software to do it?

well those nra trusts are really just living revocable trusts with the nfa language in them. I think the reason a lot of people think sean cody is good at it be because he does a lot of them and he also deals in class 3 items.

Any fool can splint a broken leg........or you could go see an orthopoedist. Either way, your leg is going to heal eventually, but the orthopoedist will likely get you better results.

If you use a competent attorney who has lots of experience doing these trusts, you can end up with a multistate compliant trust, because the required legal language of a trust may well vary from state to state. If you do your own, it may be valid here in Texas, but not necessarily anywhere else. If you hire a knowledgable attorney to draw up your trust and something goes wrong because of incompetence on his part, you can file a malpractice case against him to recoup your losses. If you screw things up for yourself, you have nobody to turn to but yourself.

The consequences of screwing something up when it comes to NFA items are quite steep. Are you really willing to take that gamble on your own legal capabilities? Even lawyers say that the lawyer who defends himself has a fool for a client.

By all means go ahead and do it as cheaply as you can, but don't be penny wise and pound foolish. The price of hiring someone competent to do it for you is a fraction of the total cost of procuring and registering an NFA item. That's my 2¢.

Some people do their own taxes. Some people pay a professional. If someone is competent to do their own income taxes (with or without the help of TurboTax) then they may also be competent to write their own trust with the help of Quicken WillMaker.

A man's got to know his limitations. And should understand that his limitations are not others' limitations.
When in doubt

I agree, and do my own taxes every year. Made a mistake 10 years or so ago and had to ante over $1,000 for missing a 1099 when I filed. Honest enough mistake, paid the tax and interest and on my way.

Mistakes that can invalidate a trust for NFA purchases seem to carry a little stiffer penalty...

Q: What can happen to someone who has an NFA firearm which is not registered to him?
Violators may be fined not more than $250,000, and imprisoned not more than 10 years, or both. In addition, any vessel, vehicle or aircraft used to transport, conceal or possess an unregistered NFA firearm is subject to seizure and forfeiture, as is the weapon itself.

[49 U.S.C. 781-788, 26 U.S.C. 5861 and 5872]

Guess you could say I paid to sleep better at night and the trust was free. ;-)

I've used him recently.

Cost = $450

Ease? Rediculous

Give him names, and counties. Bam. Sent over a weekend.

Quicken willmaker is NOT an NFA trust. In the end, I'd rather have a professionally done NFA trust that I can count on being iron clad.

I will tell that to my nfa collection ;-)

For what it is worth, I changed some stuff with ms word after making it with willmaker and had it looked over before I sent it in by a lawyer friend cause I was scared. I don't speak legaleese. I think $450 is a fair price for no worries.

From a curiosity standpoint, I think it would be interesting to see both of the trusts in a side-by-side comparison, to see where they differ, where they are similar, etc. :tiphat:

Indeed it would be interesting to see the differences between a trust for NFA items, a trust for motor vehicles, a trust for real property, and a trust for financal nstruments like stocks. :headscratch

I bet the Records "buildings" for the BATFE must be huge to store all those copies of trusts. Too bad it's not a submit one time and buy all you want type of thing.
