The Remora Holster/Talon Grip Review:: PIC HEAVY

#1

Post by snatchel »

I have read several reviews on here about how great Remora is, how wonderful the holsters work, but have not seen any pictures of them. Still, I was interested. The ability to buy one holster that can be moved from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock at any point in the day is priceless to me--and I have not found any other option on the market that offers that capability.

Also, I needed a bumming around the house/gym shorts option that worked. I have a smart-carry, but rarely use it (it's on loan right now anyway). This looked like it might fit the bill.

I emailed Alan at Remora and told him what I was looking for. I told him that I had 3 carry guns (M&P, G17, G30) and probably 20 holsters that I rotate between all three. He promptly emailed me back with this:
Your service to our country is very much appreciated.
The holsters that I suggest for the following hand guns are all none re-inforced and they are as as follows:

G-17 - #11 or lower profile allowing a little more grip #11ART

G-30 - #6

M&PC - #6ART

Please e-mail me your shipping address and I will send out the holsters asap .. See how they work . We will worry about payment later

Thanks again - Keep SAfe !
Alan
Tell me that isn't good customer service. Remora is sending me 3 brand new holsters for absolutely free. I will end up paying for at least one of them in the end, assuming I keep one, but he is offering to let me try all three with the option to pay for them at a later date, assuming I like them.

Holsters will be in sometime next week. I thought I would share this, and keep this tagged for future updates-I will be posting a thorough, well documented picture review.

Alright Fellas,

Today was a big mail day for me. I was expecting the Talon grips to come in, but I was not expecting the Remora Holsters to, and since both magically appeared in my mailbox, I shall review both today :)

Talon Grips
Talon grips is back in business, and I placed an order last Wednesday after them not taking orders for a little over a month. I expected their products to be backordered, and am extremely happy to see that they bounced back quickly from being closed for so long. Less than a week to my mailbox.

I have tried the sandpaper-y type grips before, and they work great. The problem I had with those was that they would dig into my skin during range sessions, much like the Gen4 "RTF" grips wear my hands raw when shooting more than 100 rounds at the range. Fortunately, Talon Grips came up with a solution for those who wanted a better grip on their pistols without going the sandpaper/skateboard tape route.

I am familiar with the 'Rubber Texture' grips because they were already on a Glock 30 I own from a trade. I liked the texture--grippy, but not so much that it catches on clothing. I was sold. I ordered them for the Gen4 Glock 17 immediately when I bought it, and today I was able to install.

The fit wasn't perfect. The instructions that Talon provides says that on some Gen4 Glocks, some trimming may be needed around the magazine release, and in this case, some trimming was needed. I nipped the corner of the grips off with a pair of scissors after measuring. This required minimal effort, and in no way affected my purchase experience with Talon. 5 minutes after opening the packaging envelope, the grips were on and ready to go.

Now that the grips were installed, I was ready to move on to examining the new holsters, courtesy of Allan at Remora Holsters.

I first thought the idea of a no-clip holster a bad idea. I was cautious about them, but since Alan said he would send me some to look at before purchasing, I figured I had nothing to loose. I inquired about these holsters on Thursday of last week, and they arrived today. Very expedient shipping.

The holsters come with a rubber textured shell that supposedly sticks to clothing like glue, permitting the buyer to carry a gun in a holster with no mechanical attatchments whatsoever. After examining the holsters and wearing one for a day, I can attest that they do the job. There has been ZERO movement of the holster on my body.

These holsters truly shine because they can be carried at any clock position on the body, with unlimited options on cant. Appendix, Crossdraw, Strong Side, Small of Back-They all work, all in one single holster!

The craftmanship seems legitimate. There are no loose strings or glaring mistakes on the holsers, and they appear durable. I will not know the full extent of this until I have worn them for a couple of months, but I certainly don't expect them to fall apart. You will see from the photos that I have 3 holsters and only 2 guns. One of the holsters was for a gun that I happened to get rid of this past weekend. Sorry about that guys.

For this review, I have the "11ART", made for several guns, but I will be using a Glock 17. The other is a "6." This fits many guns, but I will be reviewing it with a Glock 30.

Fit: Each gun fit the holster perfectly. In my case, neither gun wobbles or moves around in the holster. The fit is snug, but if turned upside down they would fall out, assuming there is no pressure holding the gun in. These holsters are not made to have any retention on the gun except that retention that is provided by your waistband on the holster.

Quality: Excellent quality. Each holster was gorgeously made, and there were not any cosmetic issues on either. I expect these to hold up quite a while, and Remora backs this up with a lifetime warranty.

Bonus: I received a complimentary magazine pouch, which also looks like good stuff. It fits both the G17 and G30 magazines.

Alan is a great guy. He cares about his customers (and resellers) and always does whatever it takes to make things right.

Love my Remoras. I posted a review of the one I received for my EMP here: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=38863

I have since ordered one with a reinforced top without the sweat guard which I much prefer for my EMP, and I also use it for my Kahr CM9. I also recently ordered one for my Springfield XDs. They're great for when you're not wearing a belt (and even when you are). The Remora with my Kahr is probably the most comfortable concealed getup I have with a Hogue Handall Jr. covering the checkered grip.

Yep. You might email and ask to make sure though. Gen 2 are without the finger grooves, right? Either way, they should work fine.

No finger grooves. Looks like it would work but I couldn't find the application chart.

They are super easy to trim down, so if you decided to blindly order I'm sure you could get it to work. I would still email them. They will reply quickly.. usually like an hour
