That bag from the web site.stevie_d_64 wrote:Question or need of clarification "GSchretter"...
The link you provided showed some belt "rigs" that look like fanny packs...
Is that the "bag" you are referring to, and the "bag" the orange jacketed store employee was referring to???
Or were you carrying the firearm in an opaque/not clear, or see through "shopping" type bag...
I guess I haven't "clicked" to this just yet...
Thanks...

If he meant anywhere in the store, well that's questionable. Then he walk closer to me with a very frim voice and said I can not let you go anywhere. Now lets check that gun
My take on this is that he thought you had a gun in the bag, as you say. Telling him that you don't have a gun should give you a pass. Even showing inside the bag would have satisfied him, but I wouldn't think you'd have to do that.
Say you walked into the store with a rifle case marked "SKS". Wouldn't you think he has the right to examine it? Even though it may not have a gun in it?
There is a sign posted on the doors requesting all guns be shown before entering, as a store policy. I don't think that has anything to do with concealed carry law.
Bottom line is somehow he knew or suspected you had a gun. He doesn't know how stupid or smart people are, it sounds as if he was doing his job. Basically, you told him you had a gun. Maybe his actions were inappropriate, and possibly potentially illegal. But I wouldn't blame store policy on this incident.
I do not blame the store at all. Actually I really like the place and I have spent a good amount of money there.
I was informing people of how a certain employee treated me.

I will be constructing a letter to the president of Cabelas about my experience but just be prepared when you walk in that someone might have a few rude question why you have a one of those bags strapped on or what the budge you have on your side.
Sportsman Guide has a sign and has no problem with me carrying so I will go there for now on.

Let us know what comes from the complaint. I'm sure they will have to follow up on it and send you a corrective action.
Hopefully, if he's let go from Cabelas, he won't get a job at Sportsman's Guide , Then where would you go?
I believe there is safety in numbers..
numbers like: 9, .22, .38, .357, .45, .223, 5.56, 7.62, 6.5, .30-06...

Just kidding...
About three weeks ago, my wife and I were shopping in that same Cabelas, both carrying. I was looking at their safari jackets, and asked the saleslady to point me toward the changing rooms so that I could try one on. She gave me an odd look, as I assume that most folks don't mind taking their jackets off in public. However, she was quite friendly and helpful, although she must have had a good idea of what was going on. Bought the jacket, but I'm hoping that I wasn't the catalyst which led to closer scrutiny for customers.

I haven't been to Cabela's while carrying yet. IIRC, a forum member works there. I wonder if he'll weigh in on this topic?
There's a lot of room between "suspected" and "knew". Having read the account carefully, the employee said he knew GSchretter had a gun "in that bag" (meaning, the fanny pack). And what he "knew" was incorrect. GSchretter did indeed have a gun, but it wasn't in the fanny pack.O6nop wrote:Bottom line is somehow he knew or suspected you had a gun.
As someone else said, what he was doing was not his job; it was what he presumed his job to be, which was to serve as some kind of door cop. And for the record, not knowing how stupid people are is a darn good reason to not piss them off, especially when you believe they have a gun.He doesn't know how stupid or smart people are, it sounds as if he was doing his job.

I feel like there's something missing here, that's all. I have met a lot of jerks in my life but I've never met one like this Cabela's greeter that wasn't drunk, high or severely challenged mentally. A guy, for no reason accuses someone of carrying a gun, surely he doesn't do that to everyone... He says he "knows" he had a gun in the bag. We don't know that he doesn't until later, we find out he's carrying a gun bag but the gun's in his pocket. Why was it in his pocket instead of his bag? Did he move it while in the parking lot? Did someone see him with it and notified the front desk? All we know is that he tells the guy he has a CHL. Pretty much admitting that he had a gun without showing him, or did he? Did he ever show him the gun or CHL? We don't know. He never denied having a gun. It sounds like he admitted he did. Did he comply with the guy? The guy didn't restrain him enough to prevent him from walking into the store although he followed him. And the orange vest, did it say "security" on it? There just seems to be a lot that isn't revealed. I'm filling in the blanks with my imagination, I guess.
I'm trying to imagine someone being a total jerk as he describes, but in my 50 years, have never met anyone like that, gun related or not. I'm trying to get to why this greeter guy would react the way he did. I'm not trying to accuse or defend anyone, just interested in learning all I can about these situations, since I carry. I may want to know what to do in a situation and why someone would react like this guy did. I probably would have reacted quite differently, but I won't know until it happens.
I'm just hoping that we hear back about how the complaint went and what actions were taken.

You have been fortunate. In the mid '90s I was in a local stop and rob looking at the cold medicine. The clerk, out of nowhere, yelled out, "hey you leave!" I looked up, wondering who he was speaking to. He was looking directly at me and said even louder, "I said get the fire out of here", except he used much more colorful language.O6nop wrote:I read the account carefully, too.Having read the account carefully

For one of the few times, I was dumbstruck. I stood there like a goober, trying to figure out what was going on. Apparently this enraged him, as he stepped from behind the counter and began to scream at me. I snapped to then, and walked out carefully watching this guy.
To this day I have no idea what his problem was.

It would not have mattered if he was security, except to ask you to leave. You do not have to produce CHL or weapon except to LEO.
I would have gone straight to the manager and complained. If that didn't bring satisfaction, would have taken my business elsewhere and then on to corporate with a complaint.
If he had tried to restain me, I would have called the police.

1. Never at anytime was the gun exposed. It always stays in my front pocket.
2. If I did exposed the gun then I should have been arrested right? Didn't you take the CHL class. I was told that if you expose your gun for any reason unless your life could end you will go to jail.
3. I carry a bag because I switch between different cars all the time and I do not feel like picking up all my personnel item each time. Yes I have carried a bag for years before my CHL and no I am not g a y.
4. I did not show him anything, he started to back off, when I told him, "What do you think I am stupid" and I moved to defend myself. He got the picture but I should not have moved to that level.
You can try your best to put it back on me, but the fact is I was a customer that walked into their store and I felt that I was treated very unprofessionally regardless if it is your favor store or your personnel experiences. I am not here to debate what has happen but to make people aware there could be trolls as like yourself at Cabelas.
I think the store is great but they might need to work on their professionalism toward customers. I been to the store at least 20 times and always have had a great experience.
Only reason I can figure out why he did it is because I cracked my elbow Saturday and my arm was hanging down to my waist and I could not move it and he saw that I was injury and decided to get off and pick on someone with a disability.
I am over it and if I do meet him again, I would like to talk to him about it but I do not want him fired just understanding. Maybe he was having a bad day.
he probably is a really cool guy that I could share a beer with.
If I do go to the store again, I will not have my bag with me since the store / employees are jumpy about them.
I do see a stores point about checking fire arms but a CHL does have the right to carry. Yes the store can question the CHL but it should be in a professional manner.
Well this is last time on checking the thread I need to move on.

And you were taught wrong. AN inadvertent "flash" of the gun is not a violation. Several people one this board have had LEOs whisper to them that they were showing.
