Well I live in New Orleans for the next four years. I carry everyday pretty much everywhere. I don't frequent bars but just about everywhere sells alcohol. I have not seen a single sign anywhere saying I couldn't carry there. I use good judgement and there are some places I know you shouldn't carry. Sporting events at any level that are organized. Casinos or any place that has legal gambling. Bars that serve open containers. And of course the federal building downtown where my wife is currently stationed as well as any other court or law enforcement station. Also the post office of course.

All that said we went down to the French Quarter and downtown walking around and went into some shops and ate at a resturant that has a bar. It was a family type establishment and to be quite frank even though it was broad daylite outside I wouldn't have felt all that safe without carrying. We walked along the river where we were appraoched by 2 homeless men who were acting rather strange then had another shout at us as we walked by. It was startling to say the least.

Living here has been quite the adventure so far. I have even been approached by a guy asking for money while standing in my own driveway and the cops have stopped people who were walking down the street after dark 3 times. It was even a little more nerve racking while out on my CBR. I stopped at a convience store and had some guys just stare at me they leaned on there car wathcing me get off the bike walk in the store and then leave. The whole time I was wondering if they were thinking about making a move to jack my motorcycle. I went in got what I needed adn got out of there and made sure no one followed me from there as I made my way to the house.

All in all I think I am better off carrying than not even if I ever have a run in with Ilaw enforcement while carrying I suspect it won't be a big deal. Mind you I have a military id as well as all the other identification and CHL on my side.

Seems like there is a ton of violent crime here per capita when compared to where I lived and have my permenant residence in the Houston Metro area. I haven't seen this many people put into the back of a police cruiser in a long time. I cannot wait till our four years here are up.

Oh as far as the hanging out around bridges. I wouldn't but its not because they would shoot me. Seems to be a common place for the homeless and other less motivated people to hang out. It's not just on the east bank west bank too. As well as the highway 90 park and ride lot near Whitney Avenue just as you cross over the Miss. River Bridge.

Enough of the negatives though. This place does still have some unique culture to offer and there are things worth seeing and doing here. I pray for them to clean up this town and work thru the corruption it has seen. Cause for every person who is unfriendly there are 5 that remind me that this is a place worth something. Let's all hope they can improve that ratio.

OrangeAnimal... Sounds like YOU are located in a less than desirable area. I'm from the Westbank (born/raised... moved away in '08), and also frequently spent time all over the East side. True, there are some areas even I won't spend extensive time in/around, but it wasn't far off from Houston's kill count when I first moved here (League City) last year. I will say that post-Katrina, things were WAAAAY worse than any other normal city. But, I am sure if any other major city would have gone through what happened there, they'd have their fair share of crime (and other issues too). Stuff can happen ANYWHERE. I feel that way about some areas in North AND South Houston now (inside beltway 8).

In any case, CARRY on. :cheers2: If I were still in "The City", I would DEFINITELY carry!

I have heard stories about police confiscating guns if you don't have the reciept
from when you bought it they say it is stolen. They have another funny law about paying cash for
second hand goods I don't know how this works ( Lousiana) :boxing
