Best MRE?

Re: Best MRE?
I think I'll do a combo of freeze dried (yes I have a filter, UV purifier, and chlorine tabs) and regular MREs. If we're evacuating in a car (hurricane, etc.) we won't mind the weight. If we're packing it out after the Armaggedon then the freeze dried will be the best option.

Look into these commercial versions

Cabela's and Bass Pro sell them. Self heating. That's what's in our BUGs.

I lol'd at the "make sure you buy a rock or something" comment. HA!
I think all the heated ones are ok. beef stew and spaghetti with meat sauce not too bad. Mostly the other crap besides the entrees are better minus the first strike or hooah bars. bleh.
I don't like mcdonalds and I would rather eat a year of mcd's over a week of mre's. Whatever you do get the hot ones. also some of the ones from other countries are not too bad. The canadian and french ones entrees are horrid to me but at least the french comes with a box o wine. I think it is the italians that give you a little bottle of brandy. woohoo. It all sucks to me.

With 2000 calories in each MRE, you can probably choke down enough calories stay alive before you can't stand to eat any more. At least that's what I did in my college dorm's dining hall.JP171 wrote:there are no good or best of the worst MRE's civvy or Military, they are all nasty have about 2000 calories and the sand to pound. been eating the nasty things for over 20 years and am never going to like them.

Always thought they did a pretty decent job making the MRE's at least quasi-edible.
Granted, the old school "beef slice in BBQ sauce" and "beef diced with gravy" were pretty heinous, but they came with tabasco sauce, so....
Didn't like the fact that they began to add "vegetarian" meals, and crap like "spiced tea" instead of coffee, but I think they definitely made improvements over the years, and you can't be too picky when you're living out of a ruck in the boonies.
Still preferred the LRRP's and cold weather rats though...
My goal is to follow after my great-grandparents example and stockpile canned meat, dry rice/beans, and canned veggies. They had enough chow to last for months, as I'm sure most citizens did from their generation. Country folks probably still have that mindset. City folks, however? Not so much.
