So true, but sometimes they are hard to identify. Some are lit by flashing lights and do not indicate the times. Some only have the times on the signs and no lights. And some are obscured by tree limbs or near corners or intersections where a driver's attention may be on other vehicles and not a sign. There are several different school zones within 1.5 miles of my house and they vary by at least three different times they are active and have all the different conditions I listed above.gigag04 wrote:I forgot to do this earlier...

I am not and have never been a LEO. My avatar is in honor of my friend, Dallas Police Sargent Michael Smith, who was murdered along with four other officers in Dallas on 7.7.2016.

I hope when you send the letter, you remind him that as of 2009 (I think) there is no longer a penalty for failure to inform an officer and him threatening to take you to jail over it was completely inappropriate.KarrMar wrote:Spoke with the chief of police in The Colony today. Re: Forgot to show LEO my CHL
Beg your pardon if I missed something in your post, but how did he know to ask if you had your weapon if you didn't present your CHL? I've read rumors that your CHL would show up if they ran your DL but thought they were unfounded. I've been pulled over once for speeding since I got my CHL. I presented it with my other papers and nothing was asked about my weapon.KarrMar wrote:The LEO comes to my window and very rudely informs me I'm going 35mph in a school zone. It's not a rumor. Your CHL will show up during a DL check.Kadelic wrote:Beg your pardon if I missed something in your post, but how did he know to ask if you had your weapon if you didn't present your CHL? And asking about your weapon is entirely up to the LEO, the is no requirement for him to do so unless it's some local policy.WildBill wrote:It's not a rumor. Re: Forgot to show LEO my CHL
Trust me, it comes up on a DL check. Not one word about a CHL or a weapon was said by him or me until after he ran my license & then it was him that asked about my weapon.Kadelic wrote:Beg your pardon if I missed something in your post, but how did he know to ask if you had your weapon if you didn't present your CHL? Re: Forgot to show LEO my CHL
I've seen some people on this forum state that it depends on who pulls you over/ what they check on whether the CHL comes up. From personal experience, I have been asked about my CHL when I didn't present it (wasn't armed at the time).Kadelic wrote: Thanks very much for the info, somehow that detail escaped me.

Some people get confused because there is a rumor that it would show up when they run your plates. It will not show up with your plates, but it will with your DL.Kadelic wrote:Thanks very much for the info, somehow that detail escaped me.WildBill wrote:Kadelic wrote:It's not a rumor. Re: Forgot to show LEO my CHL
I prefer the KISS method (keep it simple stooped)
1) Keep both DL and CHL together.
2) IMHO Show both when asked for ID ...carrying or not.
3) I teach my students to say..."Here is my license and my CHL and yes I am carrying, or no I am not carrying today.
Notice, we did not say the evil G word or the W word when reffering to the license or the item.
In my "personal" opinion and "experience" this works VERY well, and in MOST cases unless you are suspected of a crime other than a simple moving violation, the LEO will be very pleased with this aproach.
I did say "most" because some LEO's just don't like CHL period, but that is another topic. Most that I know, want to discuss weapons, and caliber choice, etc etc.

Carry safe and carry when and where you can. I'm just sayin'.

Re: Forgot to show LEO my CHL
I have stopped many people who don't hand over their CHL or mention it when I ask for their ID. Doesn't bother me one bit, I'll still find out.
And yes, it comes up plain as day when I run your DL.
Depending on the situation I may or may not ask if you are armed when I go back to your vehicle.
I was a CHL holder before I joined a PD, I've been on your side of the contact several times. I too forgot once or twice to mention my CHL or give it along with my license and insurance. It happens, I won't be grilling you over it.
Law Enforcement Officers are just regular people like you. We have bad days. We are held to a higher standard by the public as well as our departments and are suppose to be better than that, not suppose to let it show or affect our interactions with the general public. Even the best of us have our days. That doesn't excuse "those guys", I'm just saying take it with a grain of salt. I will admit though that some of my Brethren are wound a little too tight.

Re: Forgot to show LEO my CHL
Ah that's life. We are all just people trying to do are jobs no matter what they are. There are people in every career out there that can be wound a little tight. Most in my experience are just like you and me. I will say I have dealt with some younger cocky guys and girls for that matter but I don't remember being any different in my younger years. I will say as a public servant whether law enforcement or otherwise you should realize the gravity of what you are saying or implying. Most folks don't have all the laws and rules in their head stored away for future use or a handy cliff notes guide with them. So many will believe what a officer says without much thought. I know when I was younger about 17 I got pulled over and was told that I could go to jail for for speeding thru a school zone and that I may possibly loose my license for up to ten years in the end none of that happened and I never even had to pay the ticket cause they reveiwed my case and found that the school zone time had already expired by just over a minute. I tried to argue my case to the officer even pointed at my watch and he had an excuse for everything. So I agree the side of the road is no place to argue your case. Now I just take the ticket and go about my day.
