Concealed Carry with a Weapon Light

#1

Post by LSUTiger »

Does any on conceal carry with a weapons light?

I have a Springfield XD 45 that I conceal carry in an IWB Comptac Mtac Holster. I like it very much and after much trial and error has been the best option for me so far.

I also want to get an IWB Comptac Mtac Holster for conceal carry of my Glock 19. Currently I use 5.11 shirt and 5.11 conceal carry undershirt for it but prefer the Comptac Mtac IWB, its doesnt make me sweat like a pig like the 5.11 undershirt.

When using either gun as a night stand gun, I alway attach either a Streamlight TLR1s or TLR2s. I have both. I am big on having a weapons light for low light/night time situations. I normally carry a Surefire G2 or Streamlight Stylus Pro light with me when conceal carrying for target ID and general safety purposes.

I am considering getting the IWB holster for the Glock 19 in a weapons light version for the Streamlight TLR1s/TLR2s.

What is the practicality/comfort/concealment of conceal carry with a weapons light? Is there a general consensus on the issue by any of the so called experts or training schools? Any advice, opinions and experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Just to clarify my position. Carry a gun. Carry a handheld light. The question is "should I carry weaponlight?" NEVER carry a gun with a weaponlight without carrying a handheld light.

I have no experience using a handgun-mounted light for EDC, so I have no useful holster suggestions. Seems to me like that would add a lot of bulk inside the pants, but hey, I am already carrying a 1911 and 2 spare mags IWB, so adding a light may be a piece of cake.

I have carried several pistols with a tlr-1 attached. Sometimes I even carry my full size glock 21 .45. I use a Raven Phantom right at the 3:00 position. It is not the most comfortable, but sometimes it is nice to have a light mounted .45 and 2 spare mags. Mostly I carry with my Glock 17.

I do not EDC this way, only when I KNOW that I will be out after dark. Or when I go to movie theaters, malls, or other places without windows. I also carry a surefire backup as my EDC light.

One thing that I do not like is that nearly every light compatible holster has a wide opening for the light could allow something small to enter the holster and grab the trigger. I can even get my own pinky in there and dry fire the darn thing. Be careful around small children.

+1 for Raven Phantom, long wait time but worth it. I carry an M&P 45c with TLR3, and my Raven is comparable to my comp tac.

I do on both my carry pistols, PX4 SC and my P30. I use custom Bradley Kydex Holster. A+, works only for winter and jackets or summer with an outdoor vest.

I carry the Glock 17 with a TLR-3 on it frequently as well. I never carry it IWB with the light attached, although I have a few times before. Like someone else said above, I usually only carry w/ the light attached if I am leaving for a movie or something in the evenings... and since I'm frequently out in the evenings, I get a lot of mileage out of the light/gun combo.

I carry in a kydex OWB rig made by JMCustomKydex.

^^ This one. It was worth the wait.

Either way, you said you carry a separate light for flash-light duty purposes, and I agree with that. I also carry a small tac light for normal use.

It is very easy to light up a situation without shining the light directly at somebody. Point the light down if outside, or up inside & you'll have plenty of light to see.

I only have 1 handgun that has a light rail on it, but that one stays by my nightstand or near me in the house. I carry a light between a fixed blade & my spare mag on my weak side. I use it quite often. I wouldn't have a problem with carrying a weapon light also if I had a suitable holster.
