Why I don't belong to the NRA

#1

Post by StevenFromTexas »

It's probably been twenty years or more since I was a member of the National Rifle Association. When I signed up for a one-year membership at the time, I was hit with multiple renewal offers BEFORE I even received the first issue of the magazine. Those offers continued throughout the one-year membership. And those offers continued for a time after the expiration of the one-year membership. It seemed my membership fee was being redirected right back toward me on wasted printing and postage costs instead of more important issues.

Anthing changed since?

Become a life member and the renewal notices will stop! You can become a life member for only $300.

Last time I signed up for a annual membership I had clicked at "do not promote," and the quantity of mail/e-mails was reduced significantly.

What Alex said. Just add yourself to the "do not promote" list. After I did that a couple of years ago, I get virtually nothing from the NRA other than American Rifleman magazine and my certified instructor information/notifications. I actually wish I received a little promotional info, just not the full-on marketing engine.

Interesting replies. I may head over to their website, which didn't exist the last time I was a member, and check things out. :cheers2:

After you enroll CALL them and request to be taken off all mail lists. Then ask to be transferred to the insurance group and make the same request there. You need to do both. My mail stopped in about 3 weeks and did not come back after renewals.

No disrespect, but if your joining the NRA for the magazine then you are joining for the wrong reason. I, like you was a member in the early '90s. I re-joined in November on a two year membership. I think the NRA Needs as many members as it can get for the next 2 years to fend off the attacks on the 2A. In lieu of a $300 lifetime (a good deal), I signed up 10 people in my family @ the $25.00 membership. Level. Since I've signed up I have received multiple email updates on the current state of affairs, and they have asked for monetary help. I can't blame them though, because I think we are in the fight of our life. :cheers2:

I stopped the promotions to save then the time and money... when I have extra money, I know where they are. Until then, they can save a few nickels not sending stuff to me.

O.K. I just signed up for two years, and I am going to receive the magazine I selected in digital format to help out on their costs. I'll see how things go as far as not getting trash mail from the NRA. I really want to see my funds go toward more important things other than renewal notices. I've seen enough replies on this topic that my mind has changed . . . didn't think that would happen when I started this topic.

You will be pleasantly suprised. I was like you. I had joined the NRA years ago but let it go because of all the junk mail and the fact that I didn't always feel like they looked out for me. I rejoined in Nov because I knew after the election that it was time to put petty differences aside and unite as defenders of the 2A. They have not been bugging me about sending money and the majority of E-mails I receive from them are about things that I am wanting to stay informed of.

Since Sandy Hook, I have signed up my wife, my youngest daughter, her husband and have actively engaged others to join.

Don't forget to give to NRA-ILA if you can afford it. They will be fighting a lot of battles on the legal front in the upcoming months/years. They're going to need as much support as they can get.

This is who I typically donate to. The last time I donated, I checked the "don't send me the gifts" box. They sent the stuff anyway. It is usually worthless junk and I would prefer they utilize the money on other issues.
