Educate me on 1911 Mags

My Wilson Combat mag is like butter compared to the factory Kimber mag.

Maybe it's just my "old guy" memory, but I believe I recall from my 1911 days that driving a magazine home, with greater capacity than the original designed for the particular frame, with too much force could damage internal parts and/or cause other issues. Dunno.

It can bend the feedlips - newer-style mags have a "stop" on the front of the magazine-body to prevent this.

Thanks Andy, I knew there was something. But how would that apply to using a full size (8 rd) mag in an Officer size (7 rd) grip? Wouldn't the magazine suffer damage to the feed lips if driven home with authority, or is it not enough size difference to be concerned with?

I also recommend Tripp Mags. They are made in Texas!

I have 5 of them and then I upgraded all of my factory mags with the Tripp Upgrade kits. It gives you a better spring and the same follower as the Cobra Mags they sell.

I bought some dirt cheap mags from Midway when they were on sale for $7.99 and added the Tripp upgrade kits for $8.95. These mags function flawlessly.

A "Officer's Size" mag will not fit in a Govt. (full size) 1911.....no matter how much you jam it.......LOL

I'm new to 1911s and don't consider myself an expert, but...
isn't this backwards?

Wouldn't the magazine just hang out the bottom of the magwell, but still work?

On the other hand, Officer's (shorter magazine) may not work in a full-sized 1911 because it is too short
to reach all the way to the breech? (is breech correct term here? some other term? --sorry)

Govt into a officers will work.

An Officers model will not fit into a Govt.

A "Full Size" (Govt.) 7 or 8 round mag will not fit in a Officer's 1911.....no matter how much you jam it.......LOL

Of course it won't go fully in, but as it has no stop on the outside of the magazine like the modern 10 rounders, ensuring it is seated with too much force (palm of hand) will eventually damage the feed lips as Andy says.

You might try Tripp Research... good quality and a Texas company. They aren't "cheap" but you don't want "cheap" mags anyway.

I also have a number of Wilson mags which have been great. (and Wilson spring & followers in my Kimber mag bodies)

I am using the 8 round Chip McCormick and 8 round Pro Mag and they both run great in my gun.

My Dan Wesson CCO came with Checkmate 7rd mags, they have functioned great, so I bought a bunch of them (a lot less expensive than Wilsons or Tripps as well). I run CMC and factory Colts in my series 70 govt model. They work great as well. I did have a Tripp come apart in my CCO (follower came out on last round! ), locked it up good, will not use another one in that gun.
