Where do you guys get your brass?

It seems I have to run back and forth to chase and catch my flying 45 brass.

Do you guys actually do that at range?

The only time I stop to pick it up is if it's mixing with someone else's brass. Otherwise, when I finish shooting I usually manage to pick up at least as many as I've shot.

There is a forum member that sells used brass at times. I bought 4000 pieces last time. Starline and Winchester are my preference for new brass and I usually buy them only when they're on sale.

Along the lines of "Hey, that was my idea", when I started reloading for a 1911 back in the '60's, I took a coathanger and light cloth and made sort of a butterfly net arrangement that I held in my shooting grip to catch brass. Now there are all manner of brass catchers, and you won't look as dorky as I did if you choose to use one of them.

I usually pick up my own fired brass. Sometimes a neighbor will ask me if I'd like his brass - I never turn them down. If I don't load for what they offer, I swap with someone who does.

If I've got to buy new brass, I haven't found anyone to beat Widener's prices: http://www.wideners.com/index.cfm. sometimes, they've got "once fired" stuff that I'll buy.

I built a brass catcher out of PVC and some netting. Works pretty well although my KelTec fires the brass up and over the catcher. Then I have to pick it up.

The range owner where I shoot lets me pick up brass whenever I need it. This is the only time I pick any up. Let it fall and not bother with it when I shoot. Usually pick up a couple gallon cans of brass then shoot till I run low then repeat the process. I like to use my pecan gatherer for picking up the brass (.45 acp), saves wear and tear on the back.

Our range owner does the same thing.He says that we can take as much brass and used lead we want as long as we can carry it off the property.We usually take a few 10gal buckets and he gives us a broom and we just have a field day,then we sort them once we get home.Hes told us also,if we just drop the buckets off he'll fill them as he has time.Hes a pretty cool guy.

I have over 10lbs of mixed 9mm brass already decapped and polished if anyone is interested.We dont need it.I only shoot .45ACP and my hubby shoots .45 long colt.If I dont have any takers its going in the trash b/c its in the way.

I'll be passing nearby during the afternoon or late evening on the 30th of this month... taking 79 back home on a road trip. Can I pick it up then? I'll be buying a Hi-Power the next day, and have wanted to get into reloading. 10lbs of free already prepped 9mm brass seems like a pretty good excuse!

Yup, seems from the shipping weights I find online that 10lbs equals roughly 1000 cases. Definitely worth the 2 gallons of gas it will cost me in the rental car. 1000 cases seems a pretty good number to start out with.

Yeah,theres roughly 1K rounds in there.I've just got it sitting around in my office already in a ziploc bag,so all you'd have to do is contact me and I'll meet you wherever.

It is a start. You will find that 1000 is good start but not a real surplus.

I still don't know how to reload. I would like to learn this summer.

I've been picking up brass and sorting it when I'm at the range. Lately, I've just been passing it off to Dad, Charles, or Dave, depending upon who's around when the brass is in ziplock bags.

(But once I learn, it will be MINE!)

I aim to learn how, once I move into my new place in June, where there's no restrictions against guns, "explosives" such as gunpowder, or the like. Just need to pick out the kit I want to use. Just need something that will work with 9x18, 9x19, 7.62x54R, and 7.5 Swiss.

Any suggestions? I've been told the Lee kits are good, and should have dies for all of those.

I may be wrong but it sounds like you go to Lionstar. I joined back in January and try to go at least twice a month. Sam had told me the same thing but most of the brass I get (besides .22) is .40 S&W. Very seldom is there any 9mm or .45 ACP . I did notice that the lead from his trap appears to have alot of treated lumber splinters in it, so apparently it's bouncing out of the trap and hitting the ceiling.

Sorry for the (almost) hijack.

Back before Christmas, I bought about 6,000 pcs of .45 ACP from a man Charles buys from. I need to get back in touch with either him or llwatson.
