Approval/Registration Process for 30.06 Sign???

#1

Post by rdhetrick »

Hi,

Two colleagues of mine just took their renewal class this past weekend and asked me about something they were told. First, our building is properly posted so this is why they brought it up.

They were told that there is some sort of approval process or registration that a business needs to go through with the city, municipality, county, or state before they can put up the sign. Something like how some cities require you to register with the PD when you have an alarm system at your home.

This was completely new to me, I have never heard of anything like that in the several years that I have been following the forums. I have always thought that the business owner or someone with his authority could put up the sign, and provided the sign met the requirements, it was enforceable. Is there more to it than that?

On a semi-related thought, would a sign be enforceable if some anti-gun nut went around town putting up valid signs on other people's businesses?

Thanks in advance,
Rob

Nope. No government registration required. Though it would be nice if they'd list themselves on texas3006.com so we can avoid giving them any business. :evil2:

As for the random signs posted by an anti, yes, they would be enforceable as long as it was a proper 30.06 sign. How would a CHL know that it wasn't put there by the business?

I can't imagine you would need to register anything, again this is one of those, "it's MY business" things. you buy the sign you put it up. If some anti-gun guy came by and put the sign up, well, it's my business, I'd take it down...I'd know my business front well enough to know what should be there and what shouldn't.

my doctors office building now has a valid 30.06 on one of the 2 entrance doors - I usually disarm anyway because of getting weighed :grumble

I will be looking for a new doctor soon

Thanks for the responses, you all confirmed what I already thought, but I just wanted to be sure I wasn't sleeping during that portion of the class or something changed since I took it.

Thanks again!

Our business has a large (20 foot plus) lighted sign on the building. Houston requires us to have a sign permit. I wonder if he is mixing and confusing the two issues.

I suppose that is possible, we are in Dallas, actually Richardson. I'll ask them if that might be what the instructor was referring to.

It would be interesting to find out that there was indeed a statewide requirement for any sign over a certain size, say 8"x10" to be approved in advance and a fee paid for display of such, wouldn't it???

I thought about getting a new doctor, but I'd still weigh the same :biggrinjester:
Sometimes if I am going to a doctor, I carry in a way I can remove it from my belt, or handcarry concealed just before getting on scales, like Wilderness Safepacker ... http://www.thewilderness.com/index.php? ... t=171&pg=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and I suppose there could be a municipal sign ordinance, but even an "illegally posted" (under city ordinance-no fee paid or permit tag issued) sign would be enforceable if compliant.

Another misinformed instructor. Wish instructors would just teach the law and not pretend they know stuff they don't.

Possible, but it's much more likely that the persons in question simply misheard what was being said. The old game of "whisper" and all that.

Could be, but I laughed silently through most of my renewal class. Very little law and a whole lot of opinion.

The confusion could be related to the TABC signs.

I can understand that. It's in our nature to want to understand things clearly. So people will have a tendency to ask "what if" questions in the hopes of being given solid, dependable answers. Unfortunately our legal system doesn't make things clear cut and so it's near impossible to be sure. Just look at how many times we've seen people (even instructors) post here that if there is ANY "no gun" sign a CHL shouldn't enter. And there are instructors that teach that!

What we really need is a "TX CHL Law for Dummies" book or, better yet, just have laws that are written in plain, easily understood language with no ambiguity.
