As far as I'm aware, only back taxes (state) and back child support are show stoppers. Besides, aren't most student loans federal, not state?

I'm not sure it's that simple.

Sec. 411.172. ELIGIBILITY. (a) A person is eligible for a license to carry a concealed handgun if the person: [...]
(11) has not been finally determined to be delinquent in the payment of a tax
or other money collected by the comptroller,
the tax collector of a political subdivision of the state, or any agency or subdivision of the state;

However, owing money is not the same as being finally delinquent, whether we're talking tax or other money.

Any monies owed to the state will have to be paid before she can get a CHL.

If you want a definitive answer, you'll need to contact DPS.

We cannot give you a definitive answer because you have been very vague about the correspondence you have received and if there are any prior actions.

Here is what the statute says:
GC §411.172. ELIGIBILITY. (a)(11) has not been finally determined to be delinquent in the payment of a tax or other money collected by the comptroller, the tax collector of a political subdivision of the state, or any agency or subdivision of the state;
"Finally determined" is understood to be the result of a process. There would have been previous collection attempts and some sort of correspondence telling you the outcome.

We haven't read your correspondence, so did it appear to address the issue of ruling you to be "finally determined to be delinquent in the payment"?

What's wrong with that direct quote from the eligibility requirements in the law?

I think it's due to the phrase "finally determined to be delinquent" in the statute. Owing money, and determined to be delinquent are different situations. If the OP knows his wife has been determined to be delinquent for a fact, then the statute speaks for itself. That's the first thing I'd find out for sure.

Shouldn't this thread be merged with the related thread -- essentially the same topic for the same person.

Maybe they didn't like the answer and were looking for a second opinion. :biggrinjester:
