Or, perhaps, my copy of the letter giving the usual full, complete and timely notification of important information that DPS usually supplies to all instructors got lost in the mail.

I am reading here about the need for an NRA Instructor's course.

I seem to have grasped that someone wanting to become a new CHL instructor needs to take this class as a prerequisite. Is that Correct?

My main question is:

If a person has had a CHL Instructor's certificate for 6 years, is the NRA (or some other) class required for a renewal?

I'm no longer a NRA or CHL instructor, and have never been a lawyer, but in my reading of the rule, I see no grandfather clause in the requirement. It appears to apply to all CHL instructors equally, new or renewal.

DPS has not stated it will be required to renew this year, but that doesn't mean it will not. It is the law and they are requiring any new students to be previously certified. This being a legislative year, I believe they are waiting for pending legislation that impacts CHL to see how that affects things and will make the call on what has to be done. I would think they would at least have a process in place that allowed someone reasonable time to get certified.

I became a Texas CHL Instructor in 2001 and at that time I was a NRA Basic Pistol Instructor. That has long since expired because I did not teach any NRA classes. It will cost me $300+ to get re-certified as an NRA Instructor along with the $100 for the CHL Instructor renewal. I will not teach NRA courses and that will expire AGAIN in one year. I guess I will have to retake the NRA course again in 2 years to requal as a CHL Instructor. I am also still waiting for my CHL 90. I hope this is just a big misunderstanding.

If you let the NRA ratings expire, you will indeed need to retake the course to reacquire them. However, it is my understanding that you don't actually need to teach any classes to maintain the ratings, just pay the renewal fees (which can be for more than 1 year at the first renewal).

This is my understanding, as well. I have kept my certification yearly by paying the fee to the NRA, but have never taught any classes.

I used to assist teach a LOT in Washington, but after I moved to Austin, life got too busy for me. Man, I was _this_ close to getting my muzzle loading certifications too. *Sigh*

If he was NRA certified pistol instructor when he became a CHL instructor you would think that would be good enough. If you look at the law it gives the required training TCLEOSE instructor Texas Occupations code 1701, TOC 1702 which is what I came in under (armed security officer instructor) & NRA pistol instructor. My question is surely DPS is not saying you have to remain certified by one of these in order to continue to renew chl instr. I will in the near future retire from instructing at the security academy don't plan on keeping the J license costs 100 bucks a year. I'm probally not making any sense but if he was qualified when he came into the program can't see DPS saying you have to continue keeping up the license in order to renew. Just asking maybe something I'm not seeing here believe me not the brightest candle in the box.

If you do not teach your own class but help teach a class that counts as well. There is a place on the internet when the instuctor logs his class fro an assistant. You have to have him put your number in that bax to get credit. Hope that helps.

+1 on this. All you need to do is assist on a course with another instructor once a year to keep your certification up....

Talked with someone who "knows" in Austin last week. YES, they are requiring new instructors to be either NRA instructors (or TECLOSE) before they take the class AND they are requiring them to be instructors before they can renew

This person said that it has always been part of the requirement, but they haven't enforced it in the past-but now they are going to

OK...I just waited on hold for a LONG time and finally talked to the CHL people. I was told that all Instructors up for renewal received their renewal letter too early and that was NOT supposed to happen. I was told that we would receive another letter in the near future and we would NOT be required to have a current NRA, TCLEOSE, etc. handgun Instructor Certification. This guy sounded very positive about this and I explained that I HAD a NRA handgun Instructor Qual back in 2002 but it has expired. He said it would not matter for the current Instructors and new info would be sent with the new letter. I will wait until this summer and if I have not heard anymore from them, I might just go get the NRA Handgun Instructor again. I hate to spent the money but I would also hate to have to attend the CHL Instructor school again. I invite anyone else to call the number (512-424-7293, wait on hold) and see if you receive the same information.
