For the CHL Instuctor profiecency test, is there an approved list of ammo? Due the problems of getting ammo, I want to start looking early.

There are no requirements by law but the range might have requirements. Some ranges only allow brass cased ammo. Some Blazer is aluminum cased. Ask your instructor what his qualification range requires. The range itself might have ammo to buy.

I brought reloads(commercially made, not home rolled-not sure it matters). I agree with howdy about the range requirements, the range I went to only allows brass. Make sure you have 50 rounds.

So the state range (DPS) didn't require factory ammo?

Unless DPS changes their range regulations because of ammo shortages, they are pretty strict about their ammo requirements. No reloads, and only from the approved list. This is for instructor qualifications only, not student qualifications.

When I did mine, they did check our ammo. They didn't go so far as to require "sealed boxes" or anything like that, but they did check our ammo before we were allowed to qualify.

50 should be plenty to qualify unless you're a terrible shot, you do shoot 50 rounds when you do your range time.

.38 is not that hard to find. My local Academy always has it. The Range Officers at the DPS range Do check your ammo. They are very strict on range rules and they have no sense of humor when it comes to infractions (as it should be) Many of the students bring extra ammo. They might sell you a box if needed, but I would not count on that. You need to think about bringing a spare pistol too. Every time I have gone for requal,there is a least one shooter with a broken pistol. Someone has always had a gun they could shoot, but again, don't count on it. You must score 90% so a strange pistol might not be good. It is a beautiful range in the middle of no where. Be sure to watch your mileage when you turn off the main road. That is about the only way to find the little road leading to the range. I don't recall if it was on my GPS.

I know this is off subject...but. Don't show up with a 2 inch barrel revolver. I know that is what people carry, but don't try to qualify with that. I use a 6" S&W that is a nail driver. I see guys with the Matt Dillion 9" special cowboy revolver. Make it easy on yourself. Same for your pistol.

It must be SAAMI approved and on their list. No Aguila, Tula, Brown Bear, Wolf, etc. Remington, Winchester, Federal, etc.

Many thanks to everyone for your help!!! I picked up a Ruger 4" security six just for this purpose. I'll also be using my Rock Island 9mm 1911. I shoot them both a lot. Not too concerned about the 90%, but I will be prepared.

1. make sure it's SAAMI approved

2. Keep it in the original box

3. Take extra JIC

Taking extra can help you out some if there's someone who either brought the wrong or has to requalify as well.
