Foster parents

#1

Post by Paint_dry »

My wife and I are fostering with intentions to adopt. Right now, all my guns are double locked (yes double) with ammo and magazines stored separately. My question is can I legally carry if we are out and about. I don't want to jeopardize our foster license but I also want to protect my ever changing family.

I don't see a legal issue, but you might be violating their rules and breach your contract. CPS and most social agencies are.very liberal and anti gun. I spent 4 years working that system so I know a little about it. You might check with your case worker on their policy, but that could red flag you.

My oldest Daughter was trying to adopt 2 children and guns in the home were a big no..They had to install locks on doors all throught the home. no chemicalswere allowed to be unsecured. They were asked about guns many times in interviews they went through over 2 years. The children they were trying to adopt were from thier own church. CPS inspectors came to inspect and more or less search the home. She lives in the Dallas area. good luck

When we adopted, I was required to list all my guns including serial numbers. Find that in a law somewhere! This was a CPS requirement and not a requirement of our adoption agency. They never made a stink about it but wanted to visually ensure that I had them locked up.

BTW - if you are fostering to adopt, please, please, PLEASE educate yourself on reactive attachment disorder. Also, I wouldn't advise taking any of the kids shooting until you know them VERY well. Feel free to PM me if you wish to discuss.

I was in the same situation in the late 90's , fostering and intending to adopt . Guns and being secured were on the miles of paperwork you had to sign but I dont remember an issue raised at all about me having them or any special rules but that was 16 years ago .
I am not up to date on new rules by CPS but they were never anything but helpful and honest with us . I cant tell you how glad I am that you are adopting , sure wish more people would . God bless you and your family .

That reactive attachment disorder sounds very sad. The two year old we have now goes around saying me and my wife are hers. Of course she says my in laws and nephew and our dogs are hers too :)

We wouldn't take any of our kids shooting til they were legally ours. I mean where we can change their last name and ssn. Hopefully soon. Thanks for the quick answer guys.

A co-worker of mine is going through the adoption process right now too, although his situation is a little different than yours. He is trying to legally adopt his two step-sons, so his wife is their natural mother. They just had their first in home inspection and he said the "inspector" never asked about his guns but he volunteered the info up front and all she asked was were the guns properly stored? He said yes and asked if she wanted to verify. She said, "no, I'll take your word for it". He said all she was concerned with was filling out paperwork and getting the $600 check. This in my opinion, is the problem with some kids getting placed in bad homes. Although in his case, he will be a great father and is all ready is a great step-father, not all are and don't need to even be around kids. I wish you all the best in your process. Take care of those little ones and God bless you.

I have had to investigate foster homes. While there are many GREAT foster parents, some are there for the $ and nothing more. Kudos to anybody that takes these kids in their home for the right reasons.

They must be paying more nowadays...when I was growing up, we were a foster family and the compensation never came close to what it cost...that someone is ' in it for the $$ is a foreign concept to me...

I have no idea what they pay foster parents. My reference to the $600 check was what they charge for each home inspection. As least that is what they charged my friend (co-worker). Whatever they pay to foster parents its not enough for the good ones and too much for the bad ones.

Contrary to what most people believe foster parents are in very short supply in most counties . Not many will do the work for many reasons but the reason most given is that they dont want to become attached to the children and have to see them go back to the same mess they were in after their 'parents' finish whatever rehab the court gave them . If your privy to reading the historys on these children it will scar you , it is a shame .
