Thinking of ordering a CMP rifle

Yes it does. You also need to be a member of a "shooting club" and Texas State Rifle Association will qualify for that. The nice lady at TSRA sent me an email stating I was a member. (Saves time waiting for the membership card) The CMP accepts this email too.

Steve817, I would go with the SA Service Grade Special or HRA Service Grade Special, these are 1955ish rifles in collector grade condition, the only new manufactured parts are the stock and stock metal. The action BBL and all other parts are straight from the mid to early 1950's and they have zero wear on them. As close to brand new as you will ever get. 950 + Shipping I think. I have two and a regular service grade (Nothing wrong with this grade either, just more wear on the gun).

What ever you get from I am sure it will be good and you will have a blast shooting it.

Either get some of the HXP Ball or reload your ammo. I like IMR 4064 driving the 150 gr bullets to 2750 fps or 168 gr bullets to 2700 fps.

I have a Springfield Marine Corps rebuild M1 and two M1903s as well as bayonets for all the above, all ordered from CMP. Excellent program, from them to my front door, no FFL required. I felt like a trusted member of society again. I really love these military wood/metal firearms. You can't go wrong, with the CMP, in getting quality military surplus firearms.

I was looking at the CMP web site this morning and they have a 308 version of the M1 for sale. Any issues with getting that version?

I ordered one about 2 weeks ago. I went with the Springfield Field grade. There is a dealer here in Houston that will rebuild the rifle for not all that much money. (it all depends on the condition) I wish I had added a bayonet to the order. I might go back and get one after my rifle comes in.

Can you define "not all that much money"?

I was on the CMP website and noticed the HRA Field grade M1 Garands sold out TODAY. They are getting down to very few selections. If you were thinking about getting one of these rifles, you might consider doing it in the near future. I ordered my second one back on April 4 and I'm still waiting.

LTUME1978 the Garand in 308 is a very pleasant rifle to shoot. The 308 M1 had an advantage of mil surplus ammo but that is becoming less of a factor as time goes by. There were some early versions that used an insert to convert a standard M1 to 762x51 but I do not believe that is what the CMP is selling. A 308 M1 just takes a barrel swap to convert from 3006 and it is a nice rifle. It is my favorite M1 and shoots great.

There was also a modification to keep it from chambering a .30-06 round as well.

I am sure hoping our Government will open the pipeline for those Garands and Carbines from Korea. The CMP will sure be missed, at least by me, if they do not.

I think you are in for a 4 year wait before the spigot can be turned on, I do not see it until the current admin is out of office.
