I am not a instructor yet (still waiting on DPS to schedule my class ), but since the CHL-100 is good for 1 year, he should be ok to take the class now. But he must be 21yo (or 18 if active duty or honorably discharged) in order to apply. So he's gotta wait on that part.o b juan wrote:Am I right, they can take the class when it is 6 months from their 21st birthday??

You are correct the CHL-100 is good for a year, but they told us someone could take the class at 20 yrs, 6 mo and a day...and not a day sooner. Why? I don't have a clue....

No, just commenting on the comment that the CHL-100 is good for a year... yet they say have to be 20.5 yrs....wondering why can't at 20? Also, isn't the CHL 100 good for 2 years?RottenApple wrote:Right. But since the OP's student is only 2 months from turning 21...... Btw, you are correct. The CHL-100 is good for 2 years. My bad.

Yes, CHL-100 is good for 2 years for a new license.wgoforth wrote:No, just commenting on the comment that the CHL-100 is good for a year... yet they say have to be 20.5 yrs....wondering why can't at 20? They probably told you 20.5 that's what the old FAQ on their site said. But I have not seen anything in code that says the training must be taken at any certain age, as long as the application is submitted after 21 years old.

Re: 2 months from 21 years old.
We were told in class that they could actually take the class two years before they turned 21, since the CHL-100 is good for two years. From a logistical standpoint, they told us it couldn't be ON their 19th birthday because you can't do the online application until the day after your 21st birthday since the system won't consider you 21 until the day after your birthday. The 20.5 year old information is old information, according to DPS.

THAT makes more sense! I couldn't figure the 20 yrs, 6 mo and one day thing, yet they said CHL-100 good for 2 yrs!
