A school I can carry at

These people have told me I can carry in their place of business.

This Academy is a privately owned and operated academy licensed by the State of Texas through the Department of Public Safety's Private Security Board.

They told me as long as there is no 30.06 sign at the doors I can carry there.

At one point in time I will have to carry on their property.

Are they right or wrong?

Not only is it good advice, it is exactly what you need to do to protect yourself.

§ 46.03(a)(1) on the physical premises of a school or
educational institution, any grounds or building on which an
activity sponsored by a school or educational institution is being
conducted, or a passenger transportation vehicle of a school or
educational institution, whether the school or educational
institution is public or private, unless pursuant to written
regulations or written authorization of the institution;

As folks tend to procrastinate and might never get around to drafting the authorization, might I suggest you type up a simple form and present two copies for signature.

This shows the silliness of the "school or educational facility" having remained undefined all this time.

A home school is a private school in Texas. What else could be a "school or educational facility"? Public K-12 was obviously intended for inclusion, but what about private schools? Public colleges and universities? Private universities? Barber school?

Or carried to its ridiculous undefined extreme, is it a violation to carry at your CHL renewal or Instructor school? To Sunday School or VBS? To your kid's piano lessons?

I'm unsure if we should open the can of worms on defining "school", though. Too many vocal types would try to make it as all-encompassing as possible. A better alternative might be to place them in the same category as hospitals and churches: off-limits, but only if they post.

The DFW Zoo is posted with a 30.06. I contacted a represenitive of theirs, who eventually put me in touch with one of their "attorneys". Of course I was asking for clarification as to why a publicly owned property (city zoo) would have a 30.06 posted. The attorney said it was the zoo's stance that since some schools had field trips there, then the zoo was to be considered a "school". This seemed interesting since "schools" don't need a 30.06 sign. I did forward this info to the TSRA, but they didn't seem to be very interested.

Keep working on the zoo.
Write them a letter and get your friends to write letters.
(They really need to be from the DFW area.)
Write your state reps.

It's not the TSRA's job to fight every government agency that doesn't follow the law but,
they may have some advice to help you in your battle.

Point being, without a definition as to what can be considered a school, we will continue to see this abuse of the law.

Somehow, I get the feeling the 2007 Texas Legislative Session may have a bill dealing with this issue.

Well I did get to carry in that school. Unloaded and mag removed. I took some instruction there and the range was the only place I was allowed to load up. I'll do it again if I decide to go for my investigators or other licenses.
