March 5, 2012.

That is when I laid down Copenhagen for the last time. Thanks still go to Snatchel for pushing me over the edge (check post here for some other encouraging stories... viewtopic.php?f=83&t=50580" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ). Funny thing is, I started the year you were born...strange.

I had wanted to quit for years also and finally did. Pick a reason, cancer, wife, cancer, kids, cancer. In my case, necessity too, FOR my family. I still think about it almost every day, but won't go back. I like my life, my family, and my God (who gave me strength) too much.

I actually went the nicotine gum route and it worked well. Just be sure you set a quit date for the gum! I think quitting that was almost harder than the snuff! I now chew sugarfree spearmint gum and am perfectly content.

You can do whatever you set your mind to...that's the key. If you think you are not strong enough, you won't be. You have to attack it, hate it, kick it, punch it, etc... There are a lot of people here that know you can do it, including myself, you just have to start. You are me on March 4, 2012. You are ready.

I quit smoking 20 years ago,and quit alcohol and other things 22 years ago,you will get the urge to use,if you keep some jolly ranchers in your pocket suck on one ,the urges will get longer and farther apart over time. Also whenever you think about think about how much you waste and how many new guns and ammo you can buy,and the negative aspects like cancer and other health problems
Also don't focus on the rest of your life just think I'm not gonna chew this time

My dad smoked from the age of probably 13 through his early 40s, when I was a teenager. Here's a quick story about his parents:

My grandmother, who had smoked in her 20s, 30s, and 40s, but later quit, was diagnosed with emphysema. After a two long years of watching her condition decline, she eventually had a stroke and was bedridden. She passed away a few weeks later.

Her husband (my grandfather) had smoked his entire adult life and quit when grandma got sick. She was on oxygen and smoking near her wasn't an option. He was so busy taking care of her that last two years that he never had time to realize he had cancer. He passed away six months after she did.

My dad quit cold turkey when his dad died.

He did replace the addiction with another. . . Coca-Cola. . . which essentially just got a different doctor to pester him. :smilelol5:

I agree with having gum, Certs, Tic-Tacs, and anything else you can use to occupy your hands and mouth occupied while you go through the withdrawals. Candy isn't great for you, but if you need it early on, drink water, brush your teeth, and go for it. You might also have to alter your routine to avoid triggering the purchasing habit. It's not addictive in the same way, but I had to quit junk food mostly by not buying it, which largely involved avoiding the situations where I would impulsively pick it up.

In my life, I've never seen anybody ease themselves off of the stuff. They all essentially come to a point where they're disgusted by it and walk away. If you keep it around, you'll use it.

I do have several personal anecdotes I could share to encourage you to avoid Chantix.

Best of luck!

I do agree with Fickman about the "easing" off, although it seems to be working for you. a couple of years before I met my husband, my FIL woke up one morning had a coughing fit that woke everyone up, they thought they were going to have to take him to the hospital  he caught his breath and never touched a cigarette again. Now, he had quit for short stints a couple of times, but this stuck...he'd scared himself crazy! when he died last year it wasn't the smoking, it was diabetes, age, etc...

glad I never got into that. Tried it once, got a buzz..tried it again, got a buzz and said never again as I could see why people do it. Hope you can cut it off. My dog quit smoking cold turkey and never looked back. You might try some seeds if you need to be spitting and stuff.

I only quit whenever I was having a nicotine attack. Those only last for 5-10 minutes. So I broke quitting up into 5-10 minute chunks, which I could easily manage, and I only quit during those chunks of time when I was jonesin'. I didn't worry about an hour from now, tomorrow, or next week, or next month. Kind of like AA with the "one day at a time" thing, except I did it 5-10 minutes at a time.

Nicotine fits come and go. They aren't ALWAYS on. So you only have to resolve to quit long enough to get through that fit. It actually worked real well for me.
Excellent advice. Just get through those periods of intense craving to when your more rational thought can prevail, even if it means telling yourself that you'll give in if the cravings are still that bad in just twenty minutes. Make that window small enough that you don't get through one bad stretch and into another, however!
Absolutely. It's all about breaking it up into manageable pieces.

You can do this! It's going to be rough, but good health is so much more important for you and your loved ones than the temporary satisfaction of feeding your habit. We're all rooting for you. If you need encouragement when things seem bleak, just let us know!
