Most CHL/LEO contacts are positive, how about yours? Bloopers are fun, but no names please, if it will cause a LEO problems!

1st encounter with CHL

#1

Post by liberty2014 »

Last Saturday night about 2:30 i was driving back home from dropping the lady friend at home and i seen the blue lights behind me and i figured it was for me. i pull over, roll down all four windows, turn on my dome light, put my keys and wallet on the dash then the officer walks up and introduced himself, i tell him im a chl holder and have a gun on my right hip about 5'o clock. he tell me why i was being pulled over (no front license plate) ask for my DL but not my insurance (any idea why?) i hand him my dl and chl. he heads back to his car and about a minute or two later returns to give me a verbal warning and send me on my way. he never said anything about the gun after i told him where it was so i guess he was comfortable, Round Rock PD did a great job on this stop.

For quite a while now insurance companies are supposed to report who has insurance to the state. When he ran your plate it showed you had insurance but my understanding is that it isn't 100% and most Dept will still ask.

Just to be picky, $200 is the maximum fine.

What about those of us who own vehicles that are not made to have a front plate?

That would make it pretty easy to comply. :)

I kept it off a Corvette and just took the risk. After getting stopped about 2 months ago (when there was no fine), I drilled holes in the front bumper of a Honda Civic (was out of MI w/o plates).

Made to / not made to, it makes no difference. Before you stick it in the front window, be aware that there is recent caselaw suggesting that you can't do that either.

There are brackets that mount on the underside of the car and do not require drilling holes in the front of your bumper.

No sir, designed for, and required to have a front license plate.. Was required to be installed by the selling dealer with the OEM supplied mount or one you provide...
Dodge Part number 68069345AA I believe is correct for your car... check with a dealer to be sure.... I'm a Ford guy :tiphat:

I understand you may not like how the OEM designed the front plat mount.. or that it is designed to attach to your front bumper cover with screws.. BUT that is the design supplied with your car..like it or not.
I choose an under bumper no drill mount for our Shelby.. to solve that issue.

It is usually accurate, and if the insurance is questionable or not showing the return will say to manually verify insurance or something to that regard.

I know at least one local department has a policy that requires the use of the online database as the primary source for insurance check... and if the system shows no insurance, but you have a card... policy is cite for no insurance...
Reasoning is.. cards are paper and can be kept long after the insurance was canceled.. the insurance company is supposed to update when a policy is started or canceled. There is a delay of course...and Im sure there is some officer discretion.

That is a terrible department policy in my opinion.

Your opinion might change if you knew how many get a policy, print the cards and cancel the policy that day, week, month. Perhaps that is a local / regional problem only ??? and not statewide systemic? I don't really know .

The database is more current / reliable then a printed card. Bottom line it seems the system is wrong more on the side of you not having insurance , but it says you do....then you having insurance and it saying you don't....at least as i understand it.
My understanding is.. the database is updated as soon as YOU GET INSURANCE... So if you have current coverage, your good, even if you don't have the card as required by law..
The lag is in the system showing LACK of coverage...

And like I said... I understand there is room for officer discretion.
