I remember hang-gliders launching off the small peak overlooking the Angeles Shooting Range up Little Tujunga Canyon. If you were over on the 700 yard line and looked up, the foot of the peak would be right in front of you a couple of thousand yards out. I often wondered if they had any idea that they were taking off over a shooting range. I know that if you went up Angeles Forest Hwy to the Mt Pacifico saddle, you could continue on down toward Acton/Palmdale, or you could choose to go right and go up the dirt road Pacifico Mountain, or go left and go up the service road to Mt Gleason. If you went up to Mt Gleason, going past a Sheriff's Dept prison camp on your right, and kept on going past the old Nike battery launch pads, you would find yourself on a dirt fire-road that followed the crest of the mountains all the way west to that hang-glider takeoff point....I'm guessing it was about 8 or 10 miles or so beyond the summit of Gleason. I'm looking at Google maps, and the names are coming back to me. The road west by southwest from Gleason summit was called Forest Service Road 3N32, and it eventually became Mendenhall Road. Very large sections of it were unpaved. But the memory fades. If I were there, I could retrace that ride and I'd remember it all, but looking at the maps, it's a little hard to remember all the service road intersections.

I used to explore a lot of those dirt fire roads on a dualsport bike I had back then....a Suzuki DR650. It was probably the best in the dirt of the big-bore dual sports at the time, and it had a 6 gallon tank so it would run forever. The trouble was that it had a seat like a plank, and it would just wear your butt out after a few hours in the saddle. My sportbike riding days are over. My back won't let me ride in that position anymore, but I would really love to own a good reliable (and comfortable) liter-class dualsport/adventure bike....something like a BMW R1100GS, or one of the other bikes in that class. It would be fun to go exploring on a bike again. Sadly, I don't have the funds for one right now.

GEEZE I miss all that. :cryin

So I have returned to the sane state of Texas, safe and sound. I went to Vasquez Rocks Park (wife thinks I am "odd" for spending time among rocks), up the Angeles Forrest Highway to Wilson Mountain, and to Santa Barbara.

Funny thing is - in Santa Barbara I was looking at the boats in the marina, and came across one that brought a certain someone to mind. See if you can guess who?

Haha! Good one.

It's "Mount Wilson," not "Wilson Mountain."
