Safely chambering at home?

Our Tempurpedic is great for sleeping on...but I sure do miss the springy/bounciness of the old mattress sometimes if you catch my drift. If the old mattress has good bounce to it ya might want to keep it in an extra bedroom for certain occasions.

FWIW I chamber my carry gun pointed right at the mattress all the time...never had an accidental discharge though (of the gun anyway).

I am not for sure what you mean by "guiding the slide", but you could be setting yourself up for a pistol that does not completely go into battery.

As has been noted there are a couple of 'recipes' for simple bucket device with sand that should do the trick if this is a concern.

By "guiding the slide" I mean holding onto the slide when releasing and not letting it snap back under the spring's force. XD-s is the only one of my guns that doesn't go all the way back (leaves about 1/8") and keeps from fully chambering the round, unless I push it a little the rest of the way.

I do this only in a home setting to prevent unintended discharge, when chambering. I don't particularly like doing that, and in 30 years I had never had an unintended discharge until the XD-s ordeal. That's why I am looking for something safe, yet aesthetical to keel at home to point my guns at, when chambering.

What about something like a Safe Direction academy pad? http://www.safedirection.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; It's supposed to contain a single round, so you'd be ordering a new one now, but it costs less than a mattress! Small, portable, unobtrusive. I haven't actually bought one (yet) but I've been meaning to get around to it for a good while. I guess I'll consider this thread the kick in the tail I needed.

Small, portable, unobtrusive. I haven't actually bought one (yet) but I've been meaning to get around to it for a good while. I guess I'll consider this thread the kick in the tail I needed.

She also suggests a 5-gallon bucket of sand, which you could disguise with a fake plant or something if aesthetics are an issue. Or a box of phone books stacked 2-3' deep. She's making suggestions for dry fire backstops, but the same principles should apply, I'd think.

Just wondering how many rounds had you fired thru the XDS before this occurred. I recently got one and now I guess I will send it in for repair.

I had something similar happen to me but it was an old FEG PA-63 9mm Mak. To the firearms defense I played with this one a little bit. I managed to get something not quite together right and the trigger was super touchy. I literally bumped it into my palm and it fired. Once again I am glad I never point any firearm at something I don't want to absolutely destroy. That time it was a small piece of trim and went inside of the wall. It was angled downwards and did not go thru the brick on the outside. Never took the wall apart to look for the bullet. So that was once in 20 years that I have ever experienced that. I don't want to do it again. Took 30 mins for my hearing to go back to somewhat normal.

Glad no one was hurt but your wallet. I for one would be without a place to sleep if I put a hole in ours. Stupid Sleep Number bed.

I'd dig out the bullet & frame it to hang over whatever bullet trap you get so it would be a constant reminder.

The trap itself was a 3 foot section of city water pipe with a 90 degree CORRECTION: 45 DEGREE elbow on top. It was built into a frame with instructions on the front and a small shelf in front of the opening.

It's more than you'd want to see in your bedroom, but not a bad arrangement for a club or a range.

What kind of mattress do you have? I am really surprised that a matress would stop a bullet.

The elbow at the top was 45 degrees, not 90, so it would deflect an incoming round into the sand and gravel below.
