Just Lost My Insurance

My company just held a meeting in which we were just informed we are all going into the Obamacare exchange.

Yeah.

My condolences. I've told many people at my organization that it's coming. Some laugh, some get defensive, and some are downright offended that I could even think it was a possibility. In the end though, it is almost guaranteed to happen. Since my job IS the health plan of my organization, I'll lose insurance and employment.

My company president said, and I quote, "This is where everyone is headed eventually. Within the next few years, every company will move in this direction."

He's right, too. It makes business sense to do it.

As an employer (only 2 employees - My Wife is one and I am the other) we were able to get a group health insurance policy several years ago. Rates have increased at least $100 per month per year and with the implementation of Obamacare being just around the corner, I am afraid what this years renewal price will be. I will find a way to pay for the private insurance for as long as I can.

I can help those that are dealing with this. Feel free to send me a PM. The exchanges will only benefit those that are low wage earners plays you will have to disclose much more personal information than you have to.

As self-employed, COBRA ended September 9, 2013. Now, I am waiting till Oct 1st so I can shop for Family Health Insurance plan. Not sure what I will pay and what benefits are covered. The only good thing about Obama care, no pre-existing condition denial nor limit for the coverage.

You have my sympathy. I was going to say it will get worse before it gets better, but looking at the track record of DC this century, I don't see much chance of it getting better.

Bummer.

The GOP will save us. Just ask Boehner.

I haven't had any insurance since February of 2008. You manage, that's all.

I found a doctor who does not take insurance. Cash, check or credit card only. Office visit is $35, yesterday he wanted to do an EKG, it cost me an extra $10
I see him twice a year to get BP meds renewed.

I'm curious - how big is your company? These exchanges are supposed to actually benefit in terms of bang/buck companies that have under 50 employees.

I take it that your employer will be providing you money to pay into the exchange?

No one likes the change here... How many of you have had increasing health insurance rates over the last 5 years? I'm not talking about just your portion (if your employer pays part of it) - I'm talking about total cost for the same coverage. Personally, I don't like Obamacare either, but if I'm honest, if I project what that cost will be to me and my family in the future before obamacare - assuming best case that I'm very healthy - it's a massive amount of money that the "average" joe isn't going to be able to afford.

I've heard that the health exchanges will take the cost of healthcare even higher. It's definitely forcing insurance on those who are otherwise healthy, which is, effectively, socialism...

I'm for tort reform. We could regulate the free market, but that's just as socialist...

*sigh*

In the short term, some will benefit, especially those that are older and/or with serious chronic health conditions. Long term, all will pay the price. Most of those that pushed for Obamacare and supported it the most vigorously are the ones that will feel the sting the worst.

If you have under 50 full time (30 hours per week) employees you do not have to pay the penalties, and the individual employee may participate in the exchanges. We have had to let 20 people go, and now full time mean 29.5 hours a weak. We cannot afford to pay the penalty and stay in business in the US.

There are zero benefits to us as a company, our former employees, and arguably our current employees. Obamacare has created a future in where EVERYONE who is paid hourly with have two 29.5 hour jobs.
