Question for other Sig pistol owners

I was just cleaning my Sig 226 and my Sig 229. I had never taken the grips off before now but when I did I noticed a white gunk all in the mechanism and trigger group. I assumed it was build up so I cleaned every bit of the stuff out. When I went to clean my second sig and it had the same "gunk" I decide I might check the Internet on this.

Low and behold I learn it is a grease Sig sends with its pistols and recommends. They even recommend it on the slide. How many of you Sig owners go back with this white grease and how many just stick with a light coat of standard gun oil?

Should I put the grease back on the internal parts of the trigger group? It sure seems to attract a lot of crud.

I used it for the first couple of years that I owned my Sig's. It's what Sig recommends but I have since switched to Fireclean on my on all my weapons. I don't know if that really helps you but it's your money.

Good Stuff! I use it on the 'non daily' cleaning areas like you see when you remove the grips. Otherwise, I like Frog Lube on my slides etc...as you can see, it lasts a while on the unexposed areas.

For range guns I typically use a synthetic gun grease (most brands are about equal in my opinion) on areas that do not normally get cleaned (Like under the grips) but I prefer a dry lube on the slide, barrel, and frame contact points in order to prevent build up of residue. If it is a carry gun it gets nothing but dry lube to prevent lint build up.

That seems like a bad place to have grease that can accumulate crud. Under the grips doesn't have the same exposure as the slide so I can see where this would not be a problem.

My Sig SP2022 got some crud under the grips, and it actually prevented the hammer from falling forward enough to get a good strike on the firing pin. I brought it up to Jaime at DefCon Guns here in west Houston, and he identified the problem for me.

I'm confused as to what "grease Sig sends with its pistols and recommends". Is it the stuff in SATX-Scrub's post?

I have a brand-new P938 and it has the white stuff too. I'm no Sig expert but from what I've been led to believe, they are built to very close tolerances and thus need careful attention to break-in and lubrication.

I run grease on almost all of my slides, in addition to specific places in the action. I either use TW-25B or Slide Glide. (on rifles i use Mobil 1 syn grease) Inside all my guns I use TW25B as it's much lighter than slide glide. As for the comment that a slide is a bad place for lube, it's actually the contrary. Grease stays in place better, especially if it's upright in a holster. Grease is typically better in any location that slides, and an oil on rotating parts.

Be careful. Sig does not send its guns "pre-lubed" from the factory and many people mistaken the coating inside for grease. In reality it's a protectant that they use and should be cleaned off before initially firing it and a proper lube applied. Not saying that's what happened here. In fact what you describe sounds like Mil-Comm TW-25B grease. Sig used to ship many of their pistols with a small packet of this. It's a fairly good grease and a lot of folks really like it.

As Big Bronze Rim mentioned Sigs take well to grease on the slides as it tends to stay in place (Sigs like to run wet/lubed). I've used various viscocities of Slide Glide for many years now with great results, but I also break my guns down completely after every outing. As for whether to reapply on the internals, yes you should. A very good guide to lubricating you Sigs can be found here.

More good info. I followed a few of the links from the one posted above. I Have never used gun grease on any of my many firearms but that doesn't mean it was the right thing to do. I must admit to rethinking the practice. Now I just need to figure out what kind of gun grease to go with.

Yep, the TW25b is what is endorsed by SIG http://mil-comm.com/index.php?option=co ... &Itemid=72 but you can use anything you're comfy with. Like I said, I use it on the unseen parts, and Froglube everywhere else, and an occasional spritz of good 'ol BreakFree CLP. I haven't had any lubricant issues since going to Rydol and Mobil 1 both are economical and very efficient.
