Port Arthur Store Clerk Opens Fire; Critically Injures Robber

A store clerk shoots a robber saving his co-workers' life.

It happened around 10 p.m.at the Stop & Drive on Gulfway in Port Arthur.

According to witnesses, an employee shot the would- be robber 4 times after seeing he was attemping to rob the clerk.

The suspect is listed in critical condition.

A Port Arthur police sergeant says the robber was no stranger to the store owners.

Turns out he is suspected in a robbery at the same store last week and has served prison time for robbing the same store in 2003.

Police say the shooting appears to be justifiable.

Suspected armed robber dies, extends life to others

Suspected armed robber, Brandon Oliver, died Tuesday morning from several gunshot wounds police say he sustained during Sunday’s robbery at the Drive, Stop & Drive convenience store on Gulfway Drive.


As an organ donor, several of 22-year-old Oliver’s organs are being donated to people on the donor’s list.

A suspect allegedly entered the Drive, Stop & Drive around 10 p.m. Sunday, brandished a weapon and demanded money from the clerk behind the counter, Rodney Harrison, a Port Arthur Police detective, said in a previous interview with The News.

After watching the robbery commence from outside the convenience store, a second clerk fired several shots through the store window, striking the robbery suspect.

According to Harrison, the armed suspect fled the building and collapsed in the parking lot. He was transported via ambulance originally to Christus St. Mary Hospital and later to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont where he died Tuesday.

Police are investigating Oliver’s connection to Sunday’s incident and to a similar robbery at the same location on June 19.

Oliver was charged and convicted for the robbing of the same convenience store in 2003. He was recently released on parole for the crime, Harrison said.

A report is being filed with the District Attorney’s Office and an autopsy will be conducted early Wednesday morning at the Jefferson County Morgue.

That shooting through the window thing makes me evaluate my loads once again. My 9mm currently has frangible ammo in it. Something to think about.

That shooting through the window thing makes me evaluate my loads once again. My 9mm currently has frangible ammo in it. Something to think about.

Frangable ammo ie. Glasers etc. have been known to stop in heavy winter clothing. I wouldn't carry frangable as a regular carry load. YMMV.

I think the message here is that we should shoot MORE robbers. It benefits the organ donor program.
