I've never seen any schools with such programs, but I've heard there are some sort of high school shooting events through 4H, and we all know there is competition shooting for scholars and such. I would leave my law enforcement career tomorrow if I could have a job as an instructor for high school age kids in Law Enforcement, Shooting Sports, Firearm Safety, Etc. It is my passion to educate young people firearm safety, but I haven't found a way to do that for a career. (I know some PD's have school education stuff, but that's not what I want, and I'm too crippled to go to 95% of PD's in the state anyway.)pcgizzmo wrote:I'm wondering why the schools don't have shooting teams as a sport?. I would think maybe the TSRA might be able to work with some schools to start some type of 3 gun or rifle competition at the High school levels. Obviously there would be a lot of planning, politics and hurdles because of the sensitivity to shootings and violence at schools but I would think that schools that are in close proximity to an outdoor or large indoor range might work something out. Students could store guns at the range instead of bringing them to school etc.
Sorry, I know this is OT but was in response to the above post. Just making an observation.

You have to show me pics to prove to me that anyone open carries into an office or most places of business they work at. That just screams unexpected welfare opportunity.Dadtodabone wrote:From personal observation, OC in Arizona is more common now than it was just a few years ago. While they are few and far between in the Phoenix or Tucson metro areas, my sightings of OCers over a 6 week period this summer in small city and rural areas numbered in the hundreds. Williams, Flagstaff, Sedona, Prescott, Apache Jct., Payson, Show Low, Springerville/Eagar, Safford all had some.mojo84 wrote:I bet he meant unconcealed.anygunanywhere wrote:Just curious. If you can't see concealed weapons, how do you know nobody carried concealed?Taypo wrote:Thanks! I lived in AZ a while back and open carry was pretty prevalent, but nobody carried concealed. I understand that's changed now, but I've never lived in a state where both are allowed. Gonna get interesting when it happens.JSThane wrote:As someone that lives in an Open Carry state, I can tell y'all that most of the worries CHLers have about Open Carry are pretty much non-events. Nobody grabs an OC'er's gun. Nobody draws down on an OC'er. The cops might get called, but that's fairly rare, and even if you're somewhere that open carry is technically disallowed (places serving alcohol, etc), most cops will just give you a "you might wanna take that outside, because it's technically illegal in here" lecture.
I have my concealed-carry license for politeness' sake, and because sometimes I want to throw a jacket on. But it's real nice to not have to worry about "unconcealed firearms."
Surprisingly, or maybe not, OC was more prevalent the further away from the International Border we were. I had the most sightings in Apache Junction!
A.J. is the jump off point for exploration of the Apache Trail, the Superstition Mountains and searches for the Lost Dutchman Mine as well as being the low cost alternative to the Sun City lifestyle for transient(Snow Birds) and permanent resident retirees. The retiree community is huge! There were lottsa grizzled old guys, like me, with SAA's or clones in public spaces.

Marksmanship training is offered nationally within the JROTC programs through the DoD. In these parts they use air rifles.

Re: Greg Abbott and OC
San Antonio is not a small hill country town and Judson High School is huge, and my oldest son got his hunter safety card at Judson and my younger son will get his this year. They offer an elective class about game management and it includes hunter ed. I remember one of the quiz sheets my son brought home, it was name the parts of a pump shotgun and a bolt action rifle. My youngest joined ROTC but they no longer have air rifle, said the group got too large. Hopefully when the new high school opens they will bring it back. Until then, he still has three gun.Hunter education might be taught in small districts in the hill country, but in the large cities it is unheard of. Even if taught, you can't presume that everyone allowed to carry in Texas also attended a Texas high school where gun safety was taught. I believe that the second amendment should apply to everyone eligible, but owning a weapon and carrying it in public are different matters. Some people just need to stick with the gun range if you know what I mean. Carrying in public presumes a higher level of knowledge and responsibility that not all gun owners share equally. OCT may have its roots in a well meaning and directed effort, but it has like a magnet, pulled the fringe elements in allowing the rest of us to see what could happen. They have some scary folks there, and having some in their group carrying openly without any sort of licensing or standardized training simply scares the bejeebers out of me.
