New Pew Research Center Report is Positive

#1

Post by Skiprr »

Yesterday, December 10, 2014, the Pew Research Center released a report titled, "Growing Public Support for Gun Rights, " and subtitled, "More Say Guns Do More to Protect Than Put People at Risk."

The first sentence of the report reads: "For the first time in more than two decades of Pew Research Center surveys, there is more support for gun rights than gun control." This can't make the Brady Bunch or Moms Against Everything very happy. Quick infographic:

The survey, conducted December 3 through 7, shows a shift in attitudes about whether gun ownership does more to protect people or to put people’s safety at risk. Nearly six in ten Americans say gun ownership does more to protect people from becoming victims of crime, while 38% say it does more to endanger personal safety.

A notable change has occurred in the opinions of African Americans in the two years since Newtown. The new report shows that 54% of African Americans say gun ownership does more to protect people compared to 29% in December 2012.

Expected is that the only political demographic that shows a decrease in the opinion that gun ownership does more to protect people from becoming victims of crime than it does to endanger personal safety was...wait for it...liberal democrats: down to 20% from 23%. The percentage of self-identified moderate democrats increased from 39% to 47%. Conservative republicans? They went from 70% to 86%.

That said, there are some disturbing numbers in there, too. For example, Hispanics who said it is more important to protect the right to own guns than it is to control gun ownership decreased from 27% in 2012 to 25% in this new survey. The only other segment in the 25 demographic groups identified in which that opinion decreased was, you guessed it, self-identified liberal democrats, who dropped one percent to 14%.

Here's a link to the 10-page report summary.

We all need to share this in other social media in hopes our elected officials will see it has the public's attention.

Biased as I might be.....I guess I'm not real surprised by the results. Besides, you can only hide the facts and truth so long before it becomes painfully obvious that one needs to protect themselves at an increasing rate as the quality of life in this country degrades at an ever increasing rate under our current leadership.

Having said that, I don't think a sample size of .00048% of the US population gives enough significance to the data to draw these conclusion clearly. Additionally, survey respondents of 8.7% and 11.4% (black and hispanic respectively) is also not indicative of the US demographics. The small sample size and the insignificant samples based on race make this report almost useless. Of course, it's also good to have some kind of data to support ones position and I'm sure the politico will have a hay day with the information. :tiphat:

The graphic, and the 1st sentence do not support one another. It would appear from the graphic that the rights v. control issue has been bouncing back and forth since about 2010.

Maybe they are implying that they expect the positive trend to continue and never cross again.

I think anytime we get a favorable result we should rename it the Pew-Pew Research Center.

Or maybe they're accounting for margin-of-error. The other two times, the spread looks like it was 4% or less.

I did a short interview for Houston's KTRH radio yesterday on the Pew survey, but I don't know if/when it ran. It's certainly getting a lot of attention.

WOAI San Antonio picked it up from KTRH, so I assume it's aired. WOAI's article was extremely brief, though: http://www.woai.com/articles/houston-ne ... -13059588/.
