Open carry in vehicles

Argghhhh..... the text in SB17 addresses carrying in a vehicle:

• "SECTION 45. Section 46.02(a-1), Penal Code, is amended to
  read as follows:
  (a-1) A person commits an offense if the person
  intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries on or about his or
  her person a handgun in a motor vehicle or watercraft that is owned
  by the person or under the person's control at any time in which:
  (1) the handgun is in plain view, unless the person is
  licensed to carry a handgun under Subchapter H, Chapter 411,
  Government Code, and the handgun is carried in a shoulder or belt
  holster..."

So if they pass open carry, and you carry in your car, it STILL has to be in a holster.

What the heck. That is one of the main reasons I would want to OC - I want a holster under the steering column since drawing from your hip with a seatbelt on is difficult, as well as uncomfortable. If it has to be on your hip/shoulder, dang it. Dang it dang it.

It doesn't have to be in a holster....just needs to be CONSEALED. You can conceal it under towel, news paper or anything as long as the gun can not be seen from the outside looking in.

That is true if it is concealed. However, the requirement for being in a holster is if the gun is in plain view, which would be required according to the section the OP provided if the OC law passes.

This is one thing I would like as well.

I haven't mounted it yet, but I picked up a Grassburr holster and concealment cover. I'd like to be able to use it without the concealment cover for ease of access.

So if they pass open carry, and you carry in your car, it STILL has to be in a holster.

No, it specifically has to be in a belt or shoulder holster. Not any holster will do.

Hopefully they get rid of the "belt or shoulder" requirement for the holster. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Maybe I can sew some belt loops onto the Grassburr holster and call it a day.

I don't want a steering column holster though. It would be much more convenient for it to be mounted beside my leg. Without removing the "belt or shoulder" requirements for the holster, I wouldn't be able to use a very nice, active retention (thumb snap) holster that is very securely mounted unless the firearm remains concealed. Concealment would create a burden when drawing from such holster.

I guess my point is that there are practical applications that should be lawful that don't fall into the subset of holsters that are "belt or shoulder" holsters.
