HK VP9 thoughts?

USP are even better for being Military issued pistols.

Agreed, I own a USP, P30 and VP9 and I still can't get used to the VP9's trigger, hence I stick with the DA/SA trigger. Its too hard to teach an old dog new tricks.
The USP is issued to the German Military in a special variant witrh the savety switch reversed, save position is down and fire position is up. They call it a P8 and was choosen for the fact it is made in Germany and it passed all safety and stress tests. It was the replacement of the Walther P38 (P1) which was outgunned by some east block countries with the CZ75 in the late 70's.

The classic Luger pistol was known as the P08, IIRC.
Was that because it was authorized in 1908?

I don't know where the Luger naming came from but the “P8” is the military abbreviation for the modified USP. The predecessor was the Walther P38 which was abbreviated “P1”.

I've never shot a USP or VP9, but I own a HK P30 9mm. I love shooting this gun. When I get an OWB holster for it, it will be my EDC when I can cover it. Compared to my XDm .45, it's easier to shoot (makes sense since it's a smaller caliber). It's also VERY comfortable in my hand. I see that Glock has some clear advantages (price, accessory availability/price, etc), but every time I pick one up, it's just not comfortable to me. As soon as I picked up my HK, it was like hand in glove.

Regarding recoil, I don't feel much difference between the XDm and the HK. But, my son has a broken wrist, but wanted to shoot. He could comfortably shoot the HK but the XDm was painful. Even my girls and wife (15 years old) love shooting the HK.

I am not particularly fond of having to flip the safety on my HK, but I have to do that on my Sig P930 also, so the move is similar during the draw of both guns. Plus they are both 9mm. So these are my EDC weapons.

I own two VP9 and absolutely love them- from grip to trigger to ergonomics. I also love my Glocks (G26, G19, G17, G34) but I have had to modify every single one before I likin them. The only factor i have changed on my VP9s have been the sights.
There is no reason you cannot carry them concealed with the right holster (mine is JM custom Kydex AIWB).

Pre-WWII German pistols tend to be classified by date of adoption: P08 = 1908, P38 = 1938. Post-WWII West German pistols are classified by model number adopted in series: Walther P1 (aluminum-frame P38), Walther P5, SIG P6 (220), HK P7, etc.
