Using CHL As ID

#1

Post by The Wall »

Just saw a bill passed that would allow CHL holders to use it as a form of ID. Sorry I didn't catch the HB number. Can't believe this wasn't already the law. I think CHL would have more weight than a drivers license.

HB 2739

It actually keeps someone from discriminating against a CHL holder if they use that as a form of ID. I think it's already legal to use it as ID for most things.

I don't think I've ever used my CHL as ID.

There's room in my wallet for both, and I don't think the clerk at the liquor store needs to know I'm carrying.

To me using it as an ID is the same as showing my gun.

Really?

They ask for an ID, check to make sure it DL, as it is on top of the CHL, I show the ID. They show a weapon in a threating manner, I show the gun. I will get to the CHL later as needed... Showing the plastic never means I am CC, but you just never know. Lot of details about going to the gun not present. Don't want to go down that rabbit-hole on a 'what if' scenario. I just don't see a viable comparison.

I use my CHL when I vote since it is already an acceptable form of ID.

I have also used it when banks, title companies, etc ask for a second photo ID. I do not carry my passport all of the time.

I have as well. I don't have a problem showing it.

As for "the same thing as showing your gun", I have to disagree - especially since over half of CHLs don't carry.

Actually a lot of liquor stores give discounts for CHL holders.

I carry the CHL opposite the DL in a foldout so whenever I show my DL the CHL is right there too. I've actually received comments from cashiers, clerks, LEO's etc. that when they see a CHL holder they actually feel more secure in knowing that you are a good law abiding citizen (background checked, non-criminal, etc.). I don't understand why some CHL holders are reluctant to display their CHL, but I guess whatever toots your horn, eh?

Sorry to disagree. I don't want people to know that I have a CHL and I don't want people to know that I carry. That's just my preference. My drivers license works great as an ID. I understand that just because you have a CHL doesn't mean you are carrying but to me this is a private matter.

I can understand why, but really the point of this thread is that you should be able to use it as ID and shouldn't be discriminated against if you do. It's one's prerogative, but considering it's 100x harder to get than a driver license I think it should be the law.

Something else the DPS should put on the website...
