When my wife bought her first "own gun" at the Mesquite gun show a few years back, she did not have a CHL yet, as a matter of fact she was buying it in anticipation of getting her CHL. It took a matter of a few minutes for her to pass the "instant check" and like BIG DADDY said, it took her longer to decide which gun to buy than it took to run the check.

We had only been "official" residents of Texas at the time.

While she was making the purchase I was wandering around another part of the show and her "ex" called on my cell phone, the only number for us that he knew. FGor some reason he is always kind of rude to me, and all he did was brusquely state her name as a request to talk to her. I politely answered "Gee, Chuck, I'm sorry, we're at the gun show and she's over there in the middle of buying herself a gun, so she can't talk right now.

Dead silence from the other end until I told him I would have her call him back, to which I received some sort of mumbled reply.

The girl he used to abuse and cheat on would never have been one to have a gun in the house, much less buy one.

My first gun purchase went like this (without a CHL):
We had already looked around and decided what we wanted before we got there. We walked into a gun shop around 5:45 pm. We talked to the gun guy for a few minutes and looked at the guns in his case. His price was right so there wasn't much more to say than "that's the one I want".

He said had a shipment he hadn't logged into the computer yet, and while he was logging the one I wanted into his computer so he could sell it to me - I filled out the paperwork. Then he called in my background check, it was approved, and we were out the door and on the way home by 6:10 pm.

I commented to the gun guy "that's kind of scary, how easy it is to buy a gun". His response was something like "not for law abiding citizens".

In and out -- with a gun in less than 30 minutes. Still amazing to me.

Perfectly legal.

that is the purpose of NICS and how it supposed to work.. I let my CHL lapse for a couple of years, and during that time had to go through NICS when I bought something. Never took more than 10 minutes...

You still have to fill out the 4473 (or whatever they call it now), that hasn't changed.. but the CHL is acceptable proof that you meet the requirements, and superceeds the NICS and Brady forms in Texas.

Up until '68, in Texas, most anyone could go in a sporting goods store, hardware store, pawn shop, second hand shop, drug store, country store , a lot of gas stations and some supermarkets, point to the gun you wanted, pull out the money, pick it up and leave, you could also order up to carriage mounted artillery, mail order.
How come the streets did not run red with blood then?

waasn't just in Texas. Could buy them in the northeast too.
Shame that people got so upset about the killing of a few Kennedys. Somebody decided that it was the guns fault and it all went downhill from there. Must have worked though because they stopped killing Kennedys and they are still running things up in Washington.
