Report from Libyan officials that the benghazi consulate was warned 3 days before attack that extremist insurgencies were on the rise in the area . Anderson Cooper is shaking his head, although rightly warning that this could be Libyan officials covering their bootys .

They have said preliminary reports said that amid the evacuation, Stevens and foreign service officer Sean Smith were inside the consulate with a regional security officer. They got separated in the smoke. The security officer and others went back in to try to find the two of them and found Smith dead. They pulled him out but flames and gunfire forced them to flee before they could find Stevens.

Al-Bakoush and his colleagues said that once they learned his identity, they were stunned Stevens had been alone.

"I've never seen incompetence and negligence like this, from the two sides, the Americans and the Libyans," he said. "You can sacrifice everyone but rescue the ambassador. He is the ambassador for God's sake."

Thanks Beiruty. I had read some partial, related facts, but not the whole story like this. I remember when the pictures first came out of Stevens' body being carried, everyone assumed they were parading around his corpse. And then the facts came out, like you have quoted, that in reality these civilians were trying to save him. It makes me wonder if they were part of the protest group? That would be ironic. And it would also prove that the assault on the consulate was done by another group. Regardless, it is refreshing to know that in the midst of all the chaos in Libya, there are many good men like the ones mentioned in that article.

I really don't see the point of this nonsense over the film maker. Terrible horrible things are said about every religious figure in history. It really should get a shrug off. By rioting the Islamic people of those countries have given legitimacy to this mans claim. Who in the Middle East stands to lose the most if, albeit slowly, Islamic states move in the direction of democracy? Some are not happy that the seeds of democracy have produced the likes of the Muslim Brothers, free choice sometimes produces undesirable results and that’s the beautiful thing about democracy. Those in power typically don’t take to leaving unless by their own will and timing.
