Gun safe in humid area, need dehumidifier advise?

#1

Post by CJATE »

I know there are a lot of product out there, but I am sure 1/2 dont work. their is no power, so I need one that is battery or no power at all, it’s in a closet in the garage, and very humid. I also keep papers in it, that I don’t want to mildew. It’s a typical big save from academy, nothing special, but will keep the kids and smash and grabs(ers) out.

What do you boys suggest?

I hear good things about the goldenrod, but it only plugs in as best I can tell,

Goldenrod is supposed to be good but it does have to be plugged in.

I just use a box of silicone crystals and a little strip on the box turns pink when I have to put it back in the oven for a couple of hours to dry it out. It goes for about a year at a time between the oven routine. But, my safe is inside a bedroom........

I would suspect that a safe in a unheated/air conditioned garage could go thru some large swings in moisture. If at all possible, run a wire out to the garage (underground is easy) and have a power strip on the end in the garage. Then get the Goldenrod and plug it in. I really think that would be your best bet.

Actually, they are "silica" crystals.

This is one choice.

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=180353

It recharges by plugging into an outlet, but power is not required for operation.

Safe dealers typically recommend these AND a Golden Rod type, but since you don't have power, you might use two of these.

Besides these, there are dissicant containers that you recharge in your oven.

Remington makes one that you plug into an outlet and it self-regerates.

You can find it pretty much anywhere.

I use desiccant packs that I made myself. A tip: those all-crystal cat litters... just silica gel. You save yourself tons of money by buying one of those little bins of the stuff and making desiccant packs yourself. I simply got shop towels (those blue towels for working on cars and stuff), cut 2 pieces the size I want, and staple 3 sides. Fill with the crystals, staple the last side shut, and wa-la! Desiccant packs in whatever size/quantity you want.

I first did this when my living situation warranted that I keep my guns locked up in my van. I had a lockbox that I had built myself, and found that my rifles had some rust in the bore after a couple of weeks of sitting out there. After I made some desiccant packs to put in the lockbox, I never had an issue again. I keep them in my ammo boxes and gun cases.

Anybody seen Mike1951 lately? I sure miss him around the Forum. ;-)

Another creative, no-cost solution: Visit your local Harley-Davidson dealer. The bikes come shipped with some industrial-sized desiccant packs. Most dealers just toss the silica packets in the dumpster when they unpack the bikes; no real reason to keep them. If you ask, you can probably have an armful to carry away.

+1 on the silica (desicant) packs. Dry them out in the oven.

Another tip: Make sure you do it before the kitty uses it.
Actually I got mine similar to Skiprr. At work, we got in a big piece of machinery shipped to us from China. It had more than ten huge dessicant bags in the shipping crate. When the riggers left I asked the supervisor if I could have them. He gave me a weird look and asked me what I wanted them for. I told him for the "tools" in my garage.
