Recently bought couple of toys.
Just waiting for plastic to arrive.

Bought one of these safes from Academy today for $49.xx.

You can tell it is designed to pop open when you push your buttons but it doesn't.
The door would not open easily to say the least.
I grinded down the edges to remove extra paint, thinking that might work but no success.
So I welded on a handle

The combination is 5 push buttons.
On the fifth button you have to be pulling on the handle for the door to open.
Free additional security I guess.

Is that the kind that require batteries

I know the gun safe I have has the 4 button push deal, and one HECK of a spring in it..when I enter the code, kapow the door flips open w/ some force and I have access to my pistols

It also required 8 batteries..but they last for over a year

Check the internal spring and/or check the batteries

Sounds like we have a similar model - mine's this GunVault. Love it!

I think you did good by welding that handle on the face of that drawer on the safe...Looks like it shouldn't be a handling problem in the dark either, since you can find it and feel it with no apparent problems that I can see...

I believe any effort anyone does to secure firearms for use in situations like this is outstanding...Good job!

Do some unloaded practicing to see how well you get it out and up for business...

Then do the same thing, but switch off the lights...Pick a possible break in point in your home, and see how long it takes to do the drill (unloaded) while someone works their way to your position from that break in point...

Then you have something to work with...Have fun!

Yup..exact same model!

I have it bolted to the bookshelf a bit above my head in my bedroom

At night..I lockup my condition 1 1991A1 in there, and within about 4 seconds or less I can have access to it, and the kids can't! (it would take a badguy one heck of a crowbar to try and bust it open..its not "gun safe" thick..but it ain't flimsy either!

I paid $80 for mine at the Pasadena gun show about 6 months ago..I need to find a thinner version for my truck (will bolt it to the body under the drivers seat)

I'm considering what I'm going to do about car-carry as well. Leaning towards keeping the bangstick unlocked in a holster, concealed but in easy reach while driving, and only locking it up in one of these and under the seat/in the trunk when I can't carry it with me (30.06, etc.).

Yeah, I'd prefer a combo or button lock rather than the key, but this is the only one I've seen that is likely thin enough to slide under my car seat (I think I'm probably the only male Texan who doesn't own a truck/SUV ).
