Best concise TX handgun laws for CHL?

#1

Post by JohnHenry »

I've read through the TX handgun laws on the TXDPS website, and while most of it is pretty straightforward, there are the usual legalspeak passages that make it hard to put into simple terms. I've also gone through the handgunlaw.us website, which is generally very good. Can anyone recommend a website that has a practical summary of the CHL laws for Texas that is different than the ones previously mentioned? I want to make sure I understand where someone can and cannot carry, since there are always questions. I'm going to print it out and carry it, at least for a while, for those gray areas.

For example, I was down at Reliant Center yesterday, and their signs are not legal for preventing CHL carry, but it's a city building so still prohibited, right? Or is it?

I can't think of a better site than this one. Every concise list is too concise -- it overlooks a lot of subtle points.

For places off-limits to CHL holders, you can see this list: http://www.texasshooting.com/TexasCHL_F ... =36&t=6994" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Municipal buildings in general cannot legally be posted. That doesn't stop the City of Houston from doing it. Reliant Center is a recurring question here. Basically, it should be legal to carry there unless a professional or interscholastic sporting event is taking place. However, the operators of events sometimes use metal detectors, and you are not going to get past them with a firearm. The same is true of Toyota Center and other such places.

It would be great to have a book that breaks it down into layman's terms. I think a lot of the confusion that arises in trying to understand the law comes from not being familliar enough with the legaleese and organizational scheme of the statutes.

There is one: http://gunlaws.com/tgog.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. It's written by a lawyer and costs about $20.

I haven't bought that book. I bought a copy of his "Gun Laws of the 50 States." That book is good for travelers, but it does not cover things like how to get a CHL or other issues not directly related to carrying weapons while traveling.

The Texas Gun Owners Guide is the best easy to understand book on CHL that you can find. Here is the website: http://www.bloomfieldpress.com/tgog.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The Concealed Hadngun Manual is another good one. http://www.bloomfieldpress.com/persafe.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Note for Reliant and surrounding facilities...That is Harris County property, not City of Houston. The Astrodome is officially known as the Harris County Domed Stadium. Just an FYI if someone wants to complain or question the correct authorities (between the 2, I still don't think you would get a coherent answer from either)

I didn't know that about Reliant. I figured that since it was inside the City of Houston, it was city property.

I agree that you would not get a useful answer. Someone on this forum communicated with the management of Toyota Center about CHLs, and the person was adamant that it was illegal to have a handgun on that property.

The handgunlaw.us site has good summaries. See page 2 (bottom) and page 3 of http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/texas.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for Texas but seamusTX is right that any summary is going to miss out on the fine points of the law.

I understand the law was changed regarding how long a Concealed License is good for here in Texas. It was extended.

I went on line and found, after answering several regulation questions, I need a PIN# to sign in...something I don't have. If anyone here is a Texas resident and has renewed their license over the net, would you please (1) let me know the general format of getting my license renewed via this new option, and (2) Is the PIN# something one would have only if you've had previous internet correspondence with the DPS, or is it somewhere on the license or graduation certificate?

Many Thanks In Advance! Johnny
