Hearing protection recommendation?
I currently have a pair of Browning ear "muffs" that I have been using for a long time. These have been adequate for pistol shooting indoor and out. I've recently started shooting my AR-15 more often, and my existing muffs are problematic. They are a bit too large to allow for a good cheek weld, and solid ear coverage (the outside of the muffs are dome shaped). I can make them work, but it's kind of awkward and uncomfortable.
Does any one have any suggestions on better muffs that won't get in the way when shooting rifle's? I am not opposed to ear plugs necessarily, but there is a metal roof covering the shooting benches at the range I go to. The ear plugs I've tried were insufficient at reducing the sound to comfortable levels.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Dave

The slimline (shotgunner style) muffs don't attenuate enough sound for my taste but they work OK with plugs underneath.

I use Howard Leight Impact Sport electronic muffs and I love them. They amplify ambient noise and block out loud sounds. I got them at Academy Sports on sale for like 50 bucks.

I REALLY like the plugs that are custom injected to fit your ear canal. Most audiologists can do this and I got my at the TPWD expo one year. Then just about any muffs over top are plenty.

Indoors I use both plugs and low profile earmuffs.

I got some custom ones made at the local range. They stick, for lack of a better term, a tiny tampon in your ear canal, then fill the rest of the outer ear with this epoxy putty. Ten minutes later, you have custom molded earplugs that work GREAT! They were kinda pricey for plugs, at about 30-40 bucks IIRC, but I saw a kit at Academy the other day where you could make your own for about $15.

I used that kit for my son - works pretty well. But he still gets muffs over top.txfireguy2003 wrote:I got some custom ones made at the local range.
