XD SC - 40 or 9 ?

#1

Post by JamesTX10 »

Which to get?
I have shot the XD and really like the gun. It fits great in my hand.

The question is: Should I get the SC 40 or the 9? This will be my carry gun. Only one round different in the mag. So the real issue is ammo prices vs caliber. I need to start shooting more. After I get my carry I think I would shoot around 200 - 400 rounds a month through this gun. What do you think?

9mm hands down. I used to have an XD9 SC and it was a great shooter. It is however a little chubby to be called a subcompact regardless of caliber in my opinion.
The 40 in a little gun is quite snappy, which I feel is a disadvantage due to longer shot to shot times. Of course if you practice enough then any handgun can be mastered but considering 40 ammo is nearly twice the cost of 9mm, that practice could get expensive.

If you have not already made up your mind about getting an XD SC, have a look at a Glock 26. IMO, it's the best subcompact polymer 9mm pistol that money can buy. It's smaller than the XD and holds the same or one more round, depending on the mags. It will also take G17, 18 and 19 mags. Holsters, parts and accessories are also more abundant and easier to get.

I have shot a few glocks. I really like the way the XD fits in my hand. I have big hands. I can just pick it up and fire on target faster then other guns. I have a colt mustang .380 that is just to small for me. The handle is so slim that I don't get as tight a grouping as I do with the XD.

So far it is all 9, except for the 45.: That is a bit harder to hide and costs more to shoot. I don't mind the 45 but it is a pretty good kick. The 40 and the 9 are pretty close so that does not affect the choice for me.

I would also say go with the nine. It encourages practice more both because of price for ammo and the 9mm has a substantially lighter recoil. The more fun the gun is to shoot the more you are likely to practice. That said, preceived recil is a personal thing - I have a G19 (9MM) and a G36 (45 ACP) and I do not think the difference in preceived recoil is very great.

Price definately favors the 9.

TXinvestigater,
Please clarify.
Was that Remington that thinks that 9MM owners/carriers are pansies or women, or is that your opinion?

Get one of each!

You can practice with cheap 9mm ammo, and carry the .40!

Not so much conflict, but if Remington really feels that way, I would rather not buy their ammo. They have a right to their opinion, as I have a right to to whom I give my money too. I have no interest in debating or arguing this issue.
Sorry if you took it that way. I didn't mean to come off as arguementitive.

Are you serious? Did you notice the little laughing smiley after the picture? Do you look for things to be offended about, or can you not tell its a picture made by someone?

I bought the XD sub 9mm about 2 weeks ago. It is a joy to shoot and shoots very well. It is easy to carry. Great gun for the money.

Obviously it is a picture made by someone. I just wanted to know by who.

I guess that is why I asked, rather than make assumptions. The smiley indicated that you thought it it was funny. I didn't get the joke. I thought it may have been pulled from some Remington ad copy.

I still don't see the humor in it. I saw the Remington name and I was concerned. It never dawned on me that someone would slander a company that way. If it was Remington saying that even as a joke I would have found it offencive

At any rate I won't be shying away from Remington and I meant no harm or offence.

My vote is for the 9. I've shot both and the 40 is definitely snappier. There is some great 9mm defensive ammo out there and 9mm is much cheaper to shoot than 40.

Either way you can't go wrong with an XD.

If you learn how to shoot the 9mm well, its going to put the BG down just as well as the 40, if shot placement is good enough.

With that said, I'll be carrying a Kimber 3" 45acp.

And Liberty, that image - the 45 joke - has been distributed across the internet for years. Sometimes its says "Remington" sometimes it says "Glock" sometimes there is no image at all.
