Is there a way to fly my handgun to Idaho?

#1

Post by porterdriver »

In a couple of weeks I have to go to Boise. I will be flying out of Houston (IAH), stopover in Denver, then on to Bosie (BOI). Is there a way that I can 'move' my handgun so that I can carry for the week that I am in Boise? I have looked at the reciprocity for concealed carry in Idaho with my Texas CHL and I believe am good in that regard.

The broader question is can handguns be transported on commercial airlines? Clearly not in the passenger compartment but can it somehow be 'checked in' as baggage or included in my check-in suitcase?

Clearly I am new to this and appreciate the groups advice (actual rules or websites to find the 'official' information are preferred).

This link can get you started:

The TSA and airlines seem to change their rules on the fly. Additionally, airline employees and TSA personnel are not always aware of the rules and requirements. Go to the airlines website and print out their requirements and take them to the airport with you. Same for TSA.

Yes... According to http://www.handgunlaw.us" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , ID honors a TX permit.
You can transport your gun and ammo in your CHECKED bag. You just need to follow the guidelines of the airline and TSA per the link above.

It's not a difficult process at all...
0. Read TSA and Airline rules. Read tips from fliers here.
1. Be sure to have a locking hard case that cannot easily be pried open
2. UNLOADED.!!!
3. Ammo stored in a closed box. I suggest using the original ammo box
3.5 Locked gun case and ammo inside luggage before you enter the terminal.
4. Check in at the counter and tell them you're checking a firearm
5. Fill out declaration card (date, name, sign)
6. Put card in bag with locked weapon
7. Take bag to TSA for special screening (counter agent will tell you location)
8. Have bag screened and TSA will take it from there.
9. Pick up at normal baggage claim at destination.

All excellent advice.

I fly 20-30 times a year with my firearm and the only thing I would change here is #4.

"4. Check in at the counter and tell them you're checking a firearm"

For what it is worth I always just hand them my ID, and as they are typing I ask "May I have a Firearms Declaration Tag"?

This avoids anything you saying being misconstrued as "I have a gun". YMMV....
