Did a new class

I did a new class the other day.
I modified what I normally used to do and for the most part it went well.
I will admit I was watching the clock now more than ever. I still have a little bit
of tweaking to do with the presentation of class material to fit in to the new time scheme.

It's gonna take some getting used to the shorter class.

Fixin up my lesson plan for a class this Sun. I'm just getting pretty comfortable with my 9hr or so class & bam! Starting over from scratch, well, almost.. I went thru the DPS instructor class this April. My partner just got back from last weeks DPS class and has informed me of lots of changes with time requirements etc. including the mandatory time allotment to NVDR... Someone said it here somewhere but I too believe NVDR is like a junior high class my 8th grader would get. He also stated that the App Fee Schedule had been lowered although I can only see what it's always been when on the DPS website? Anyone else more informed than I?

Im going thru the new Class Outline now to see how far off my lesson plan is that I doctored up from my 4hr renewal class outline..

I did my second new class yesterday. It ran almost 6 hours...the first ran about 5.5. Since I an a newby, I am also trying to tweak my lesson plan and still cover all of the outline topics. I find myself spending too much time on the gun handling, safety, etc. portion. I know the CHL class is not a "how to shoot" class, but I have to be realistic in the fact that some of the folks who come are not really what I consider ready, even though they can "qualify".

I am about to start offering a combo class with 3 hours of range time plus 4 hours of CHL. I am hoping that this will relieve my anxiety over seeing folks who are not really ready.

I feel sorry for the prepared students if instructors spend a lot of the shortened class time on remedial students.

Nothing personal. I also used to feel that way when I took CPE classes before I semi-retired.

It's same issue I have with public education - teaching to the bottom of the class instead of the middle.
Students should be told when they sign up for a class that they will need to demonstrate that they are proficient with a fire arm. If they aren't they should take some classes prior to the CHL class.
Of course this is simply MHO.

I have yet to have even an experienced student who didn't tell me they learned something that helped them handle a firearm better in regards to grip, stance, trigger control or follow through. Had experienced shooters who thought they were right eye dominant learn they were left eyed and tightened their groupings. Nothing wrong with review even for them.

You must be a rare instructor because I know many who say they didn't learn anything useful about shooting or the law in their renewal class.

The renewals that came through would often shoot tea-cupping, thumb behind slide, rearing back, etc. Usually saying prior instructor didn't teach anything about shooting, only tested proficiency. I can see that would be ideal, but if i can help them be better shooters, i'd hate for them to leave without improvement.
