My wife is a teacher in Garland and today they received this letter (in an email I believe) and my question deals with the part in red. If ai am dropping my son off at school on a weekday when school is in session, would I then be in violation? is day to day school considered a school sponsored activity? Does that make sense? I believed it to be ok to carry when I dropped him off or picked him up and that it only would be prohibited if there was an event going on in the parking lot ie Band practice etc.
On January 1, 2016, Texas law related to concealed and openly carried firearms changed.
However, as a practical matter, very little changed for school districts. Firearms on campus remain prohibited and should continue to be treated the same as in the past. The Attorney General has determined that all firearms, including concealed or open carried handguns are prohibited on all school grounds, including parking lots and sidewalks, where school-sponsored activities are occurring.
To comply with the new laws, the District is in the process of posting signs at each school containing the required language prohibiting firearms.
You should continue to report any and all firearms on campus to law enforcement and follow the same procedures related to firearms on District property as before. This is the reminder about the appropriate response to guns on school property:
1. If you see a person with a gun on school grounds – but not in the school – respond by placing the school into “Lockout” and notify law enforcement and district security.
2. If you see a person inside the school with a gun, place the school into “Lockdown” and notify law enforcement and district security.
Further information about these response options can be found in the Standard Response Protocol training material provided on the Intranet (see http://home.garlandisd.net/Security) or by contacting Pat Lamb, Security Director, at jplamb@garlandisd.net or at 214.893.5596.

Re: Question on carrying on school premises
Only if a school sponsored activity is taking place in that area. Picking up and dropping off your child is ok as long as you do not enter the building.

Re: Question on carrying on school premises
This is absurd since most schools in my area prohibit parents from dropping their kids off on the street / sidewalk in front of the school. They punish the kids, not the parents, but still prohibited.
How do they propose that a parent drop their kid off if the parent can't drive to the designated drop off area?
