Re: AMD-65
Bud's does have the TGI builds. So does Centerfire Systems.

Re: AMD-65
From a little research, it appears to be really easy to mod a standard gas tube to fit an AMD, and thus allow you to use regular upper handguards. So now that's my plan.

Re: AMD-65
XinTX,
It sounds like you have built one before. Maybe in a few months, if I like my first one and decide to build a second, we could get together and you could show me the ropes? I'm not all that far from you.

Re: AMD-65
Went ahead and put a deposit on one at Bud's, since they have a no-charge layaway and I still get the cash discount price. That way, I can have them hold it for now and get it shipped after I get back from annual training. I'm excited. This will be my first AK!

Re: AMD-65
What all comes with the kit? What would it take to have it completed and made into a rifle?

Re: AMD-65
I ended up doing a midlength 16" PSA for mine. I got one of their FN-barrelled uppers on sale, so I've been piecing together the rest. It has bee a lot of fun, and I'm sure it won't be the last one I build.

Re: AMD-65
Depending upon what you are looking for and what you are wanting to put in your AR, Palmetto State armory still has a lot of stuff, and their prices are reasonable, although their shipping is a little slow. The only thing I have left to acquire is a BCG, and I'll probably go to BCM for mine.

Re: AMD-65
It would never be the primary house gun, but I'd like to have enough confidence in it to make it the backup.
It is probably going to be a month before I order (waiting on a guy to buy my shotgun). Should I worry about them running out? The AMD doesn't exactly seem to be popular compared to otehr AK's, but I don't want to miss out.

Re: AMD-65
I've heard the Thermold mags that CDNN has aren't bad for AK's, and they run some good specials. Like I said, I'll be swapping parts for 992r so I can use foreign mags anyways, so it really isn't a big deal. Plus, I may stick with 20 rounders just for the maneuverability. I'm pretty excited about it. MY AR is almost done, and now I'm going to add the AK to the mix. I don't expect teh same things from the AR as I do the AK. The AK is kind of a fun gun for now that will hopefully become a serious HD weapon. The AR is being beuilt specifically for HD/SD situations.

Re: AMD-65
I'm down SW of Houston, so I might be a little far to try. Besides, at the prices they are right now, I think I'll like it anyways. :) The ones I am looking at are TGI builds on FEG receivers.
I've heard about the hot handguard and the lack of cheekweld. I plan on getting the AMDTech cheek riser, and then I'm going to swap out the piston, the pistol grip, and the the front handguard for 922r compliance so that I can use foreign mags. I'll probably go with the UTG quad rail. All the reviews I've seen on it are pretty solid, and it will let me put on a VFG and an optic at some point.
I'm kind of excited about getting an AK. I've never had one before. Are there any tips you can give me about it? Any particular mags you recommend?

Does anyone have any experience with these? I've just about decided to pick one up for fun and to satisfy this irrational urge I have to own some sort of AK variant.
