After reading the article, it appears they proved 2 things:

1. Children are curious and will pick up and examine objects they don't often get to handle unless they have been trained otherwise.

2. The parents of these particular children were negligent in failing to successfully train their children about how to act around a gun.

I see nothing new or noteworthy here. It's just another media effort to frighten the horses and stampede them toward more regulation. The Heller case has set back those efforts substantially, so you can expect to see an increase in quantity and decrease in quality in the media's efforts in this area, particularly in this election year.
