What's the best 20 gauge slug round for deer using a rifled barrel? I rarely shoot more than 100 yards and the whitetails here in central Texas are pretty small.

Best 20 gauge slug round for deer in a rifled barrel?
Re: Best 20 gauge slug round for deer in a rifled barrel?
Crash, There are several discussions here on the forum regarding slugs, but the best answer I can give you is this: It's the one that shoots best in your shotgun. I not trying to a smart aleck when I say that.
There are several types of slugs to choose from. Foster, Brenneke, Wad Slugs, Saboted slug. Even homemade cut shells and wax slugs (not simply wax, they had shot mixed in them) were used during the depression. Since you have a rifled barrel I suggest you follow manufacturer's recommendation for their products in rifled barrels vs. smooth bore. Brenneke has a very good website, they primarily make SG slugs, so that would be a good starting point. I am not recommending their products; just giving you some hopefully helpful info.
Slugs can be quite accurate if you respect the limitations on range and shooting conditions. Good luck and I hope you post your results to expand the wealth of knowledge here on the forum.

Thanks, appreciate the info and recommendation. I have a Mossberg model 500 and, from what I have read and heard elsewhere, saboted slugs work the best in them. I'll try several and post the results.

You're welcome. Looking forward to seeing them. BTW - Is your Mossberg equipped with a scope or iron sights?Crash wrote:puma guy, puma guy wrote:Crash, There are several discussions here on the forum regarding slugs, but the best answer I can give you is this: It's the one that shoots best in your shotgun. puma guy,
Don't have the rifled barrel yet. When I get it, I'll put a scope on it.

I bought an H&R 20 gauge Ultra Slug Hunter Deluxe for trips to western NY where only slug guns were legal for deer hunting. Like the others mentioned, you have to try different rounds to see what shoots best. Mine does very well with Winchester 20 Gauge Partition Gold 3". I have a 3x9 scope on it and zeroed at 100 yards. you can put it right on from 0 to 125 yards. I'll tell you one thing though, ammo is not cheap. Cost will be around $3 per round.
There will always be prayer in schools as long as there are tests.
