Help Me Spend My X-Mas $$$

I haven't seen it mentioned, and there may be a reason for that, but I thought I would throw it out there. You can get a nice wood stock lever action 30-30 for what you want to spend, possibly with a cheap scope. Haven't looked at Cabela's selection, but I would be surprised if they didn't have a couple options. I understand that it's not the best choice for long range hunting, but you said that's not what you're looking for. If this is a bad idea, I'm sure someone with more hunting knowledge than me (doesn't take much) will be along to say so.
