Walking stick or walking cane?

Happy early birthday. And no offense but those look like something that if I didn't know better I'd believe was going to slither up and bite me. :)

I happened to be in the Waxahachie Academy store today, and I took a bit of time perusing their walking "sticks" in their camping section. These are the metal ones that are in several sections that you loosen to lengthen the stick and then retighten to make it "sturdy". I came away very unimpressed with the quality of their offerings. Lengthening them to the length I would need made them seem very unsturdy. Some, I could not tighten enough to keep the pole from slipping back into itself.

The cane or walking stick I purchase will definitely be of the wood variety. I've seen some in hickory and oak, and other woods too. They are much more pricey than today's Academy offerings, but would seem to be a much better purchase.

I'm 68 and these thoughts come to me now and then. I've been researching a bit. These guys are expensive and at least in my mind are worth it. Buy once, cry once. Lots of good information and videos. Good luck with your decisions.

From what I understand their canes (Canemasters) are considered medical devices (even though they are built for fighting) just like a regular cane you can get at Walgreens or CVS and are allowed on airplanes for travel.

This makes them different than a lot of other options that are not allowed on airplanes.

So if travel is a consideration, make sure the option you choose is allowed.

If were to travel I would get the Canemaster cane as a weapon (posing as a medical device) of last resort.

For my normal daily needs:

I carry a gun.

They are so inexpensive yet effective, I keep an extra for when my mother visits and she forgets her cane. I usually send her home with my spare and then get another for when she comes next time.

The cane is the best option IMHO for normal use while in suburban areas on hard flat surfaces getting in and out of vehicles and sitting in restaurants , going to stores, etc.

For more country or rural or farm or woods outdoor use, the walking stick I think is a better option for uneven soft surfaces.

I bought a wooden walking stick from Academy along time ago because it was on sale, even though it was a bit to short for my liking but it was still very usable. I think it was a Brazos Hickory Walking Stick https://www.brazos-walking-sticks.com/

None taken! They do look a little like something that might bite, don’t they? Mine is rustic, but not quite as coarse as the ones in that picture
