Server 2008 share permissions are killin' me

I have super limited experience with 2008, but I know in 2003 you have to put the permissions in both the share permissions and the folder security. That's my only thoughts is that it might not be in both places (I don't know if 2008 has both places anymore)

I haven't played with 2008... but could it be a firewall issue? I know the Vista built in firewall is a pain...

Usually when I have problems like this I delete the account and set it up again from the beginning.

Is rjones a local or domain account? Or do you have both? It almost sounds like you may have both, and only the local rjones account is in the Administrators group, but you're trying to access the share using a domain rjones account, who's only a user.

I talked to my networking prof, and he offered the advice of checking group policies to see if for some reason 2008 locked down group policies that relate to shared folders. I'm going to check that tomorrow and see what I can see.

And trust me, "real" server experience isn't all its cracked up to be. With experience comes responsibility, which isn't necessarily a good thing haha.

Responsibility usually = on call 24x7.

well my life has always been learning new things about computers. I just got sidetracked recently and started spending all my money on guns and ammo.

I've been learning linux but I'm no guru yet lol. I am now decent enough that I can learn more on the job than at my house. Theres only so much you can do with limited funds. I'm a hands on kindof guy.

It's only a local account. The 2008 server is by itself, and not tied to any domain server.

If you look at the local security policy on the machine, and the security options, is there a "Network Access: Sharing and security model for local accounts" setting? If so, is it set to "Classic" or "Guest only"? I don't know if this setting still exists or has any effect in 2008, but the in older OSes, you'd see this behaviour if that was set to "Guest only."
