I know it is a no no to carry a gun inside of a penal institution regardless of CHL, but it is illegal to have it locked in the trunk of your vehicle in the parking lot (on premises)?
I am planning to take a tour of TDC facility as part of a Citizens Police Academy program and need to know if I can get into trouble by having it in my car.
I asked the police officer in charge of the program about this and he said just to be on the safe side not to bring it.

There is no safety in denial. When seconds count the Police are only minutes away.
Sometimes I really wish a lawyer would chime in and clear things up. Do we have any lawyers on this forum?

Re: Carrying a gun on a Penal Institution Premises
The law states on the premises of a correctional facility, meaning the building or part of a building. The parking lot is exempt.

I don't think it would be a problem if the parking lot is unsecured (no fence, guard house or, gate in other words "public") you are not on "premises". Might make a call to the facility and see what they say.

Re: Carrying a gun on a Penal Institution Premises
A substantial number of my legal customers reside in a section of the Polunsky Unit in Livingston, TX. The level of vehicle search varies from trip to trip, but since the cell phone scandal it is much more frequent. I do not carry there, the lock box might never be searched but I cannot afford the problems if it is. Some trips I get waived through, others they open trunk, hood, look in car etc...and then give me a specific parking spot #. On days of an execution over in Huntsville, the Polunksy Unit in Livingston is wound very tight, that certainly would not be the place to test the law.
